🐾 Happy National Trails Day! 🗺️🐕
Who is ready to hit the trails this summer? 🙋♀️ There is nothing better than exploring the great outdoors with your favorite four-legged hiking buddy. But before you and your pup lace up your hiking boots (or paws), let’s make sure you’re packed and prepared for a safe, fun adventure!
Here is your ultimate Trail Safety Checklist:
🎒 What to Pack:
Water, water, and more water! If you're thirsty, they are too. Bring a collapsible bowl and extra water just for them.
A pet first-aid kit. Include bandage wraps, tweezers, and pet-safe antiseptic.
High-value treats. Perfect for keeping their focus on the trail and rewarding great recall.
A sturdy, non-retractable leash. (Keeps them safe from sudden wildlife encounters!)
☀️ Watch for Overheating:
Dogs can't sweat like we do! Keep a close eye out for these warning signs:
Excessive, heavy panting or drooling
Bright red or pale gums
Lethargy, weakness, or refusing to walk
Tip: If the ground is too hot for the back of your hand for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for their paws!
🕵️♂️ The Post-Hike Tick Check:
Deer ticks love high brush. Before hopping back in the car, run your hands over your pup and pay extra close attention to these hidden spots:
In and behind the ears
Under the collar
In the armpits and groin area
Between the toes 🐾
Even with a thorough check, year-round flea and tick prevention is your best line of defense! If you're running low, give us a call before your next big hike.
