🐾 What if training wasn’t just about getting your dog to “do the thing”?

Sit. Stay. Come. Leave it.

Those behaviors matter but knowing a behavior and being able to use that skill when it actually matters are two different things.

It the training classes at Lizzi & Rocco's, I try to help owners look beyond whether their dog did something and start understanding why.

🐾What actually motivates your dog?
🐾What makes a behavior worth repeating?
🐾What is a dog getting from the choices they’re already making?
🐾How is the dog experiencing an interaction, not just what did we intend?

The better we understand those answers, the less we have to guess about what will actually work for our dogs. By learning what matters to our dogs, we can build better communication, reduce frustration, and make desired behaviors more worthwhile for our dogs to choose.

We use individual behaviors like recalls, settling, walking together, and checking in to work toward something bigger. Skills that become a natural part of how our dogs navigate everyday life and not something they only perform during a training exercise.

The goal is a dog better prepared to navigate life with their owner and an owner with a better understanding of how to help them succeed.

Classes start this week at Lizzi & Rocco's and there are a few spots left! Come join me to learn more about your dog, build practical skills, and make everyday life together a little easier and a lot more fun.

Mac says it’s the Last chance to join Beginning Manners and Skills with “mom” at Lizzi and Rocco’. The first night of Tuesday puppy was great and tonight there is a 6pm adult dog class and a 7pm puppy class. He went and practiced some of the skills at this morning as well. You won’t want to miss out!! Check out the Lizzi and Rocco’s website or send a message for more information!

Another round of Manners classes is starting next week at Lizzi & Rocco's. I have worked really hard on developing a curriculum that goes past the basics for long term success and love sharing it with all of the dogs and their owners that come take classes.

In addition to some of the important basics owners are looking for, I sprinkle in some other skills and exercise I feel are very beneficial based on the mistakes I made early on with Miss Margot.

Even if your dog has been through beginning training, there is a Mastering Manners course available as well. It does not have a set curriculum but is adjusted based on the goals of the dogs and owners in the specific class. I have even started to introduce some exercises that I have developed or customized to fit the training approach I've been working on...More to come on that soon 🙂

We would love to welcome new teams into the program! I will be teaching the weeknight classes as well as the Mastering Manners class, and the newest trainer at Lizzi & Rocco's, Annabell, will be in charge over the weekend!

You can check out the website for more information or to register. If you have any questions, you can also reach out to me!

🌞"The Rule of 150": Why Summer Humidity Can Be Fatal for Dogs

Think it's safe for a walk just because the forecast says 85° F? Think again. Dog's don't sweat like humans. They rely on panting to evaporate heat. When the air is full of moisture, their cooling system can completely fail.

Before you head out, do this quick math:
🌡AIR TEMP (°F) + RELATIVE HUMIDITY (%) = Total Risk

📊The Danger Scale:
Below 135: Safe for normal activities.
135 to 149: Use caution. Shorten walks and stick to shade.
150-169: Danger Zone. Cancel outdoor exercise.
Above 170: Fatal Zone. Strictly indoor activities.

Make sure to watch the humidity inside your house as well.

🚨Watch Out for the "Thermal Sponge" Effect: Bringing a hot dog inside does not cool your dog down instantly. Their fur can trap heat, meaning their core temperature can keep rising even after they walk into the AC.

Tips for inside:
Keep them on bare tile (not carpet).
Use a fan to move stagnant air.
Minimize humidity in the home as well.
Never leave your dog in a cramped space, especially right after a walk.

🐾Share this to keep pups safe during these scorching temperature days.

I am truly honored to have been named the Best Dog Trainer in Missouri for the fourth year in a row through Sniffspot.
Awards like this are meaningful not because of the recognition itself, but because they reflect the trust that so many owners have placed in me and my program. To every client who has invited me into their lives, trusted me with their dogs, and committed to the training process, thank you. Your dedication and support have made this achievement possible.
One of the greatest privileges of this work is helping dogs and their people better understand one another, build stronger relationships, and enjoy life together. Seeing that transformation never gets old, and it is what inspires me every day.
Thank you to our wonderful community for your continued encouragement and support. I am incredibly grateful and look forward to helping many more dogs and the people who love them in the years ahead.

🐾 What if the thing your dog is obsessed with is actually your biggest training asset?

That's the Premack Principle in a nutshell — and once it clicks, it changes how you see the whole environment around you.

Here's the concept: behaviour that your dog finds highly rewarding can be used to reinforce behaviour they find less rewarding. You're not fighting against what they want. You're using it.

Grandma's Rule puts it best:
🥦 Do the less fun thing first → earn the more fun thing.

In practice it looks like this:

📣 Dog rockets back to you on recall → gets released straight back into the game
🚪 Dog waits calmly at the door → the door opens
👁️ Dog checks in with eye contact on a walk → gets to go investigate that smell

No food needed. The real world becomes your treat pouch.

This is one of those concepts that sounds simple but has a huge ripple effect on your dog's impulse control and their relationship with you — so I made a full video breaking it all down:

I have heard you may not always get the dog you want but you get the dog you need. These dogs end up teaching us some of the biggest lessons.

I have had three as an adult. Each of them challenged me in different ways but each of them shaped a piece of how I train.

Margot taught me collaboration.
Meia taught me resilience.
Mac taught me how to build true confidence.

Together, these lessons built the foundations of my training methods.

Over the next few weeks, I will be breaking down the three pillars these dogs represent and how you apply it when working with your dog.

What is Margot’s Method?

Margot’s Method has been developed from the lessons I have learned through the unique experiences I have had with my three dogs. Each of the has contributed to shaping the philosophy and approach. It is named after my first dog, who has become well known around Columbia, for her manners as well as her antics. She led the way in teaching me the power of collaboration and patience as well as the importance of understanding the individual needs of each dog.

This progressive, reward based training method places equal value on both the dog and owner’s growth. This fosters a relationship based knowledge trust and clear communication. Not only does it focus on simple behavior reinforcement but it ensures both dog and owner actively participate in the process.

As we work through things, dogs are given choices in the learning process while owners are equipped with the skills and tool to guide and support their dogs effectively. This ensures dogs learn to make thoughtful choices, owners learn how to reinforce choices to reach the desirable end behavior, and both get to enjoy their time together much more.

Make sure to follow to find out more information on the 3 key pillars that build Margot’s Method and how each of dogs shaped them.

Better behavior starts with better direction. Good dog training teaches dogs what to do in a way that create long term results.

When I am working with a dog my end goal is always that they understand what to do but the owner is not having to micromanage every moment.

In developing this method, the focus has become
🐾Engagement
🐾Access Through Choice
🐾Calmness and Self-Regulation
🐾Better Choices
🐾Confident Dogs
🐾Practical Manners & Skills

Stay tuned for further insight into the concepts, techniques, and processes as the method continues to evolve. Plus fresh perspectives and updated strategies from continued learning.
