🐕 Heartworm risk in South Carolina is climbing — here’s what to know.
South Carolina consistently ranks among the top 10 states in the nation for heartworm cases, alongside Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi.  The latest national survey found the central Carolinas now showing more than 100 heartworm cases diagnosed per clinic  — a sign that infection density is rising, not just holding steady. Recent state-level data also shows heartworm cases rising in South Carolina, along with Texas and Georgia. 
How it spreads: it only takes one bite from an infected mosquito. Wildlife like coyotes, foxes, and wolves  can also carry and spread the parasite, so risk exists even where dog infection rates look low.
🛡️ Prevention options:
• Monthly oral or topical preventives (kill larvae before they mature)
• Injectable moxidectin — a longer-acting option giving 6 to 12 months of protection 
• Annual testing — vets recommend yearly screening with both antigen and microfilaria testing, regardless of location 
• Year-round dosing — experts recommend protecting pets year-round rather than guessing at seasonal mosquito activity
