UPDATE: As of 2:45 pm 2026/08/13 Lou and Ambessa have been returned.
At Furry Tales Cat Rescue, our commitment to an animal doesn’t end when an adoption application is approved. Like most non-profit rescue organizations, including our friends at Biscuits and Purrs, our adoption contracts explicitly require that if an adopter can no longer care for a cat, that cat returns to our rescue. We invest immense time, love, and community-funded resources into ensuring every animal in our care is protected for life.
Recently, two cats were surrendered to the Ottawa Humane Society: Ambessa, a kitten recently adopted through Furry Tales, & Lou, a cat adopted from Biscuits and Purrs. As soon as both rescues were notified, we immediately stepped forward to take our cats back into rescue care.
Historically our relationship with the Ottawa Humane Society has involved receiving calls to retrieve surrendered rescue animals, specifically older cats, shy adults, or those requiring extensive medical intervention & long-term care. We have always stepped up to take those cats back without hesitation.
However in this instance, OHS is flatly refusing to return Ambessa and Lou to either rescue or to their original owner.
When a rescue is routinely relied upon to take in high-needs, costly, or difficult-to-place animals, but blocked from retrieving a fully vetted, spayed, and highly adoptable kitten, it raises serious questions about policy consistency and community partnership.
Rescue organizations and humane societies must work together as a safety net, not in opposition. We urge the Ottawa Humane Society to honor standard rescue contracts, respect organizational safety nets, and allow Furry Tales and Biscuits and Purrs to bring Ambessa and Lou home.
We urge you to contact any of the following people to help spread the story and bring Ambessa & Lou home:
