Welcome Buck back to the pack.
Buck is a German Wirehaired Pointer who started with me as a private lesson client about 5–6 months ago. His owners are from Taos and actually found me through the Training Without Conflict website — luckily they didn’t realize Linda Porter in Cañon City was closer 😅😂
When we first started, Buck listened pretty well to dad but was way more willing to push mom around. That eventually turned into a bite when she told him what to do.
He’s really a nice dog, he’s just a lot of dog sometimes. He can be hard, persistent, and pretty convinced he should get a say in things, so a lot of the work has just been making the rules clearer and making sure both owners can follow through.
Since then we’ve built up their training foundation, worked play into the relationship, and most importantly he hasn’t gone after mom again. She can handle him now when dad leaves for business trips, which is a huge win.
This time he’s only here for a week while his owners are traveling, so it’s more of a tune-up than a full reset. I’m going to get him out in public and downtown a bunch since they don’t really have access to that kind of environment in Taos.
The basic idea is just to make what he already knows hold up in harder places. If he can keep his brain together around traffic, people, dogs, noise, and everything else downtown throws at him, that should carry over into the rest of his life too, including hunting.
His owners are also just great people to work with. They’ve put in the work, they actually follow through, and Buck is a much better dog for it.
He’s also a total goof with a toy and will sometimes buck around like a horse.
No pun intended.
Since he’s only here for a week, we may only get one video out of him this time, but I’m excited to see how much we can tighten up while he’s here.
