Sometimes, there are stories that seem to defy time, distance, and the odds. This is a story about love that never let go, hope that survived six years of silence, and a little cat named Ozzie who somehow found his way home.
It began with a sweet mama cat named Frankie, who was rescued just one day before giving birth to four kittens. Frankie and her babies were surrendered to Wild Blue and placed in foster care, where she could safely raise them.
One of those kittens was a Scottish Fold named Vandemere.
When the kittens were old enough for adoption, Joe McCravey chose Vandemere. It was a perfect match. Joe renamed him Ozzie, and for nearly two years, Ozzie lived a happy, loving life. He was playful, curious, got along with the family's other cat, and became Joe's constant little shadow.
Then, in 2020, Joe and his family were preparing to move to Nashville.
In the chaos of packing, Ozzie escaped.
Joe searched everywhere—day and night—but couldn't find him. The family had to leave the next morning, and Joe was heartbroken. But he didn't give up. He posted about Ozzie on social media, left information for the new residents, and contacted the microchip company to make sure his information was current in case Ozzie was ever found.
Then came the waiting.
Days became weeks. Weeks became months. Months became years.
For six years, Joe had no idea where his little buddy was. He could only hope that someone kind had found Ozzie, and that he was safe and cared for.
And, as it turned out, he was.
Nearly six years after Ozzie disappeared, a lady named Pat contacted Wild Blue. She had been feeding a stray cat for about three years but could no longer care for him. We asked her to have him scanned for a microchip, but she hadn't been able to catch him.
Eventually, she did.
The cat had a microchip.
And that tiny piece of technology held the key to a story no one could have imagined.
The chip was registered to Wild Blue originally and Austin Bluffs Animal Clinic was able to find his family.
The name on the chip was Joe McCravey.
The stray wasn't a stray at all.
He was Ozzie.
The little kitten named Vandemere. The little shadow who had disappeared six years earlier. The cat whose family had never stopped wondering where he was.
When Pat contacted Joe and told him Ozzie was safe, his reaction was one of complete amazement and overwhelming joy.
After six years, his little buddy was coming home.
Joe was willing to do whatever it took to bring Ozzie back to him. The miles no longer mattered. The years no longer mattered.
Because the love hadn't disappeared.
Somehow, against incredible odds, Ozzie had survived. And somehow, after six years, that tiny microchip became the thread that led him back to the person who had never forgotten him.
Today, Joe and Ozzie are together again.
Six years. Thousands of miles. Countless unanswered questions.
And yet, somehow, they found their way back to each other.
Maybe that is the lesson Ozzie's story has for all of us:
Never give up on the ones you love.
Sometimes the road home is longer than we ever imagined. Sometimes we have to wait far longer than we think we can bear. And sometimes, when we have no reason to believe a happy ending is possible, hope is all we have.
But hope survives.
Love remembers.
And sometimes, against all odds, the ones we thought were lost find their way home.
Ozzie waited six years to come home.
Joe waited six years to find him.
Now they are together again.
Because some bonds are stronger than time, stronger than distance, and stronger than the odds.
Sometimes, love simply finds its way home.
There is one more important lesson in Ozzie's story.
That tiny microchip was the thread that connected Ozzie back to Joe after six long years.
Without it, his story might have ended very differently.
If you have a cat, please make sure they are microchipped—and just as importantly, make sure the registration information is kept current. A microchip is not a GPS tracker, but it can be the difference between a lost cat remaining a stranger and a lost cat finding their way home.
Cats can slip through an open door, escape during a move, or disappear when we least expect it. Collars can come off, and identification tags can be lost. A microchip provides a permanent form of identification that stays with your cat wherever their adventures may take them.
Ozzie's microchip waited six years to tell someone who he was.
And when that moment finally came, it told us exactly where he belonged.
Please microchip your cat. Keep their information updated. And never underestimate the power of a tiny chip to bring someone home.
Because Ozzie's story reminds us that sometimes, all it takes is one little connection...
and a whole lot of love waiting on the other end.
