🐾💙 Happy Veterinary Technician Week! 💙🐾

This week, we’re celebrating the incredible veterinary technicians who make such a difference in the lives of our patients, their families, and our entire team!

From monitoring anesthesia and assisting in surgery to comforting nervous patients, educating clients, and providing those extra snuggles when they’re needed most, our technicians do so much behind the scenes and in every exam room. Their knowledge, compassion, dedication, and hard work help make exceptional veterinary care possible every single day.

Please join us in celebrating and thanking our amazing veterinary technicians for everything they do! They deserve all the appreciation this week and every week. 🩺🐶🐱

Think your pet may have been exposed to rabies? Here’s what to do next.

Rabies is a serious and nearly always fatal disease once symptoms develop, so possible exposure should always be taken seriously.

If your pet has been bitten, scratched, or had direct contact with a bat or other wild animal:

• Keep your pet away from people and other animals until you can speak with your veterinary care team.

• Do not handle wildlife with your bare hands. If the animal can be safely contained, contact your local animal control or appropriate wildlife authorities for guidance.

• Call the veterinary hospital as soon as possible. What happens next can depend on your pet’s rabies vaccination status and the circumstances of the exposure.

• If you were also bitten, scratched, or exposed to saliva from the animal, contact your healthcare provider promptly.

Keeping your pet’s rabies vaccine up to date is one of the most important ways to protect them, your family, and your community. ❤️

Unsure if your pet is due for their rabies vaccine or need to schedule an appointment? Give us a call, we’re happy to help! 🐶🐱

🐾 August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month!

Is your pet suddenly scratching, licking their paws, or dealing with another ear infection? It may be more than just an occasional itch.

Seasonal and environmental allergies are incredibly common in pets, especially this time of year. And while food often gets blamed first, what’s outside your front door may actually be the culprit. 🌿

👉 Swipe through for a quick guide to common allergy triggers, signs to watch for, and ways you can help your pet at home.

Persistent itching isn’t something your pet just has to live with. If you’re noticing red skin, paw licking, recurrent ear problems, hair loss, or nonstop scratching, give us a call so we can help get to the bottom of the itch. 🐶🐱

Dr. Walker’s pups, Benny and Jerry, are pros at staying cool in the summer heat! 🌊🐾 While swimming is a fantastic form of exercise and enrichment for dogs, it’s important to be mindful of a few potential risks to keep your furry friends safe and healthy.
Here’s what to keep an eye out for:
🐶 Ear Infections: Water trapped in the ear canal can create a perfect environment for yeast or bacteria to grow. Check your dog’s ears after every swim and dry them thoroughly with a soft cloth. You can also clean after swimming with an over-the-counter ear cleaner and some soft cotton balls or gauze! Signs of an infection include redness, odor, head shaking, or scratching.
🐶 Hot Spots (Pyotraumatic Dermatitis): Thick-coated breeds like Jerry (our Newfoundland) are especially prone to these. Trapped moisture against the skin can quickly lead to painful, inflamed, and infected sores. Ensure you rinse off any pond, river, or ocean water with fresh water and dry them completely, especially around the collar and dense fur.
🐶 Algae Ingestion: Keep a close watch for any signs of blue-green algae (often looks like pea soup, green paint, or scum) on the surface of the water. Ingestion is highly toxic and can be fatal. Never let your dog swim in or drink from water that appears discolored, murky, or has a suspicious odor.
🐶 Water Intoxication (Hyponatremia): Believe it or not, dogs can drink too much water while swimming! This dilutes sodium levels in the blood and can be dangerous. Limit intense fetching games in the water, and monitor your dog for signs like lethargy, bloating, stumbling, or vomiting.
If you notice any of these symptoms after your dog has been swimming, give us a call right away! 📞 Stay safe and have a wonderful summer! ☀️😎
