#4 — KNOW THE RULES. UNDERSTAND THE SCORE. Understand Judging Standards and Association Knowledge

📍Knowing how to ride the pattern is not the same as knowing how it will be judged.

Ranch classes are not simply about completing the maneuvers.

☝🏼Presentation matters.

☝🏼Quality of movement matters.

☝🏼Transitions matter.

☝🏼Pattern placement matters.

☝🏼Penalties matter.

And the details can vary depending on the class and association.

A professional helping riders prepare for competition should understand the rules and judging standards of the organizations their clients are showing under.

That knowledge influences:

👉🏼How a horse is prepared.
👉🏼Which classes fit the horse.
👉🏼How a pattern should be approached.
👉🏼Where risk can be minimized.
👉🏼And where points may be gained or lost.

When choosing a trainer or coach, ask:

Do they understand the rules of the associations you want to compete in?

Can they explain what the judge is rewarding?

Can they explain why a maneuver scored the way it did?

Because good coaching should help a rider understand the score—not just accept it.

📍 #3 — RIDER DEVELOPMENT
A good horse helps. A good coach develops the rider.

A trainer’s job is not only to improve the horse.

The horse can be exceptionally well trained and the team can still struggle if the rider is not being developed too.

👉🏼For Non Pros and Youth, good coaching should create more than dependence on instructions.

It should build:

✅ Confidence.
✅ Timing.
✅ Feel.
✅ Pattern awareness.
✅ Decision-making.
✅ An understanding of what the judge is looking for.

Over time, the goal should be a rider who understands what they are doing and why they are doing it.

When evaluating a program, look beyond the trainer’s personal record.

Look at the riders around them.

✅ Are they improving?
✅ Are they becoming more independent?
✅ Are they learning to make good decisions?
✅ Are they successfully competing?

📍 A strong program develops both sides of the partnership.

The horse. And the rider.

Clint Ramsey Performance Horses, we don’t just train the maneuver. We build the team.

🎉 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE GUY WHO DEFINITELY HAS AN OPINION ABOUT HOW YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG. 😂

🎂🎉Today we celebrate Clint Ramsey — horse trainer, coach, problem solver, professional micromanager of tiny details, and the reason half the barn has heard the phrase, “No… do it like THIS.”

If you’ve spent any amount of time around Clint, you know a few things:
☝🏼He can spot a missed lead change from approximately three counties away.
☝🏼He can tell you exactly what your horse did wrong… and somehow also explain how you caused it. 😂
☝🏼”Just one more horse” has never, in the history of CRPH, meant just one more horse.
☝🏼And if he says, “This won’t take long,” you should probably cancel your evening plans.

But all jokes aside, Clint works harder than just about anyone, expects a lot because he gives a lot, and has helped build better horses, better riders, and a pretty special group of people around this program.

So today we’ll give him a break. 😉
🤷🏻‍♀️ Okay… maybe not a break. But we WILL wish him a Happy Birthday. 😂🎂
👇🏼 NOW IT’S YOUR TURN:Drop your best Clint story, Clint quote, embarrassing photo, or favorite “Clint-ism” in the comments.
👉🏼Consider this your official permission to roast the birthday boy.

🎉🥳🎁🎂💐🎈🏆❤️Happy Birthday, Clint! We hope your day is filled with good horses, zero vet bills, no broken equipment, customers who listen the FIRST time, and at least one full meal eaten while it’s still hot. 😂🐴🎉

📍 Day 2 — Developing Horses, Not Just Showing Finished Ones

❓Can they show you what they’ve developed—not just what they’ve shown?

☝🏼There is a difference between successfully showing a finished horse and developing one.

A finished horse may already know the maneuvers, understand the pressure, and have the seasoning needed to compete.

Development asks more of the trainer.

It requires evaluating what the horse already knows, identifying weaknesses, improving body control, building confidence, introducing new maneuvers, and knowing when to push forward—or when to wait.

When choosing a program, ask:

Which horses came into the program unfinished?
What did they look like before?
What changed?
What did they go on to accomplish?

A good program should be able to show you the horses it helped develop.

Because training is not just about presenting the finished product.

It is about building it.

5 Things to Look for When Choosing a Ranch Horse Trainer

If you want to compete, look at where your trainer has competed.

A professional record does not guarantee that every rider or every horse will win.

But it does tell you something important:

The trainer has been there.

They understand the pressure of the show pen, the judging environment, the warm-up pen, the preparation, and the decisions that have to be made when it matters.

When you’re choosing a Ranch Horse trainer, ask:

What have they shown?
Where have they competed?
At what level?
What have they accomplished over time?

A serious competitive program should have a record that can be documented.

Not because trophies are everything.

Because experience earned in the show pen becomes part of the knowledge used to prepare the next horse and rider.

A TRAINER CAN BUILD THE HORSE. A PROGRAM HAS TO BUILD THE RIDER, TOO.

A well-trained horse can only take a rider so far.

Competitive riders also have to learn how to:

Read a pattern.
Prepare the transition.
Recognize where points are being lost.
Understand what the judge is looking for.
Make adjustments under pressure.
Recover after a mistake.
And eventually make good decisions without someone coaching every stride.

That’s why rider development is such an important part of the Clint Ramsey Performance Horses program.

We want our riders to understand what they’re doing and why they’re doing it.

Because the ultimate goal isn’t simply getting someone through a class.

It’s developing a horse-and-rider team capable of becoming competitive.

And when that preparation turns into results like this, it means even more.

Championships are won in public.
But they’re built in private.

“We don’t just train the maneuver. We build the team.”

Understanding horse-and-rider compatibility, is not just horse shopping.

THE RIGHT HORSE FOR A NOVICE RIDER IS NOT THE SAME HORSE YOU BUY FOR AN EXPERIENCED HORSEMAN.

A young or green horse may have talent, athletic ability, and a bright future.

But pairing that horse with a novice rider can quickly become a frustrating — and sometimes an unsafe — combination.

A green horse is still learning.

A novice rider is still learning.

When both sides of the partnership need someone to provide confidence, timing, correction, and direction, progress can become much slower and much more difficult.

Instead of the horse helping develop the rider, the rider is being asked to help develop the horse before they have the experience to consistently recognize what the horse needs.

That can lead to:

* loss of confidence
* inconsistent responses
* new behavioral problems
* stalled training
* frustration for the rider
* frustration for the horse
* and a partnership that never reaches its potential

For a novice or developing rider, a seasoned horse can be one of the greatest teaching tools available.

A good experienced horse already understands the job.

That allows the rider to concentrate on learning timing, feel, body position, pattern ex*****on, transitions, confidence, and show-ring decision making without trying to educate the horse at the same time.

As the rider becomes stronger and more knowledgeable, their ability to successfully ride and eventually develop a less experienced horse grows with them.

That is why buying a horse for a novice rider requires a very different evaluation than buying for an accomplished horseman or seasoned showman. Sometimes finding the RIGHT horse takes time. So be patient, don’t just buy one because it’s broke to ride, the right color or within your budget.

It isn’t simply:

“Is this a nice horse?”

It should be:

“Is this the right horse for THIS rider?”

What can the rider confidently handle?

How forgiving is the horse when the rider makes a mistake?

Does the horse give the rider confidence — or require confidence from the rider?

Are their goals local, regional, or national?

And most importantly:

Can THIS horse help the rider become better?

At Clint Ramsey Performance Horses, we pride ourselves in matching the right horse to the right rider. We feel it’s one of the most important decisions in creating a successful, long-term partnership.

The goal isn’t to just BUY a horse.

The GOAL is to build a TEAM that can grow TOGETHER.
