Do you know about the shark and the remora fish? The fish cleans the skin of the shark. The shark allows the fish's presence because he gets work accomplished through the friendship. The two are a symbiotic relationship. The fish does work for the shark and the shark delivers nutrition and safety to the fish(nobody is screwing with the fish. His best friend is a shark)
Throughout nature we see many more symbiotic relationships. Us and plants, The Plover bird and the crocodile, the badger and the coyote. There are many many more examples of this in nature.
Now think about our relationship with dogs. It is as old as time. They found mummified dogs in the Egyptian tombs. That's how far back our relationship goes with them. Inspect our relationship. Why do they hang out with us? Same reason as the fish, food and safety. Why do we keep them around? What do they do for us? They work. They guide the blind. Herd the sheep. Bite the bad guy. Hunt the birds.
We are a symbiotic relationship with dogs.
So when I hear people tell me that the dog needs to be dominated so that he knows who is boss, when I hear them say that I need to be the pack leader or be rough with them so I can "win", all I can do is think how EXTRA that is. I mean we are definitely the leader, but the phrase gets spoken as requirement for poor treatment or as an excuse to push your attitude onto them.
The dog has zero doubts as to who the pack leader is.
The dog does not want to take over and be in charge of your relationship.
He knows that he needs you to survive. Every cell in his entire body tells him to take food from the human in order to survive another day. His instinct tells him to find humans for survival.
You do not need to create this extra effort so they know who is in charge. The universe has already got that figured out for you. It has already placed you in charge. Its been that way for thousands of years. Stop being extra. Start being attractive.
Your only effort needs to be overcoming distraction and for that you will need to be attractive.
Don't Be the Pack Leader.
Provide Nutrition and safety. Then be fun

Here’s a fun little clip of our client displaying the results. She’s getting on only the second lesson. Vibrate recall training for the win!

How to train a vibration-cued recall and the keys to off leash reliability

Engagement is everything. He should be engaged even if you are not. You are competing against the environment.
Dog training is engagement vs distraction. If he isn’t a little creepy about his engagement then you have recall problems

Heeling is more than just walking your dog at your side—it’s about creating focus, structure, and clear communication. When a dog understands how to heel properly, walks become calm, controlled, and enjoyable instead of frustrating and chaotic. A solid heel builds engagement and trust, turning everyday outings into a smooth, connected experience between you and your dog.
Meet Jett, he is in the learning stages of
how to heel!

Stop the pulling. Start the partnership. 🐾❤️🐕

🐾 Struggling with a busy, always-underfoot dog? Let’s talk about “CLIMB”!🐾

“Climb” is one of the most useful (and underrated!) commands you can teach. It simply means: go to your spot and relax until released.

Think of it as your dog’s “off switch” 💡

Try using “climb” when:
👉 Guests come over
👉 You’re cooking dinner
👉 You need a calm moment in a busy house

The goal is about staying & learning how to settle.

💛 Pro tip: Make their “climb” a positive space they want to be, not a punishment.

Consistency + patience = a calmer, more focused dog

👇 Does your dog know “climb”? If so, what do you use it for?
