Picture of the Day #15

I finally rung in Fall in Central Texas with my first little fire at my family property in Limestone County. I sat here watching the flames with Hiwa next to me and looked up.

Man it’s a beautifully clear starlit night tonight. If you haven’t stared at a fire and the stars for a while, you really should!

There’s something ancient and universally human about these two scenes. No matter your color, ethnicity or country of origin. Fire and stars are awesome.

I’d include a pic of Hiwa but my phone camera couldn’t quite capture him lol.

Same tree third day!

Like I mentioned in my previous posts about resurrection ferns, they serve as habitat to all kinds of critters!

While I was walking back to my car today I heard two birds fluttering in the same tree I photographed every day since Tuesday. When I looked up it was two Blue Jays picking away in the ferns looking for food.

Of course I pulled out my Seek by iNaturalist App and correctly identified it right away!

The same tree 24hours later!

Honestly I didn’t know these ferns died or rather go into a dormant stage that quickly.

Nature is cool kids!

This is more of a failure to notice.
We had some pretty good rainfall last week. While I walk underneath these trees at least twice a week it took me until just now to realize that all of the resurrection ferns had resurrected!

It’s one of the more neat parasites in this world, it looks dead, shriveled up and brown when there hasn’t been rainfall, but as soon as it rains it comes back to life and provides habitat for tons of critters!

Next time you walk anywhere on Texas A&M University be on the look out for these!

Watching the news today and Lucy decided she was gonna nap in front of the TV. I noticed how when she’s at rest you can perfectly see the last couple of ribs on her.

That is what a dog should look like at a proper Body Composition Score (BCS)

You should always be able to easily feel your dog’s ribs and see the last one or two while they are at rest. Study after study has proven that overweight dogs die about 2 years sooner than healthy dogs.

I don’t know about y’all, but I’m not willing to gamble away that much time with my best friends just so they can have an extra treat….

Picture of the day #10

I noticed Hiwa was salivating when I fed him this evening, I took a picture thinking I would make it a learning point about Pavlovian conditioning. But then I noticed that the more obvious conditioned response is that I taught him to sit pretty before he gets his food.

Why Sit Pretty?

Party Trick or Physical Therapy?

In healthy dogs without back injuries teaching this command can actually have serious benefits as it strengthens dogs core muscles.

Anyone who knows me knows my dogs don’t know any useless tricks like “shake” (I don’t judge though 😅) but “sit pretty” is a legitimate workout command that helps with stability and core strength. Oh and Hiwa is in fact a boy and at a healthy weight 😂

What you’re looking at here is two things.

First, While Hiwa the black dog looks obese, I promise you he is in great shape and somehow oddly crouched down and wet making him look that way (I almost didn’t post this pic lol)

Second, it’s about 15 water bottles and other plastic trash that floods into this retention pond from D.R. Horton Homes construction sites.

I’ve complained to them, to the city, to the super intendant and have picked up countless amounts of trash from them in my neighborhood and around this pond.

Honestly, what has to happen for Texans to care about their own communities?! City of College Station residents don’t even seem to care about their own neighborhoods…

Picture of the Day #8

The first Deep in the Heart documentary with was on of the best I’ve ever seen. I liked it so much I saw it twice in theaters when it came out!

I’m absolutely stoked to see the second one today, but I am also sad that the only theater that plays it within a 1hr+ radius only has one show time a day and that at 11:50AM…

I wish Cinemark Theatres would have given this movie a better show time so Texan’s can see how beautiful their state is and how special the animals are that live here.

Obviously, I can’t help but notice that I am the only person in this entire theater. And that’s just downright sad.

’tMessWithTexas

I’ve been all over the world and seen a lot of the U.S.

Texas is one of the most Trash polluted places I’ve ever seen in the first world, especially most our river banks look more like Afghanistan than they do like those of a highly developed first world nation. What has really ground my gears for the past few years is mowing over that trash and turning it into small chunks of plastic even easier for animals like birds to collect and fish to eat. Of course this all flows into our public waters through storm drains and stays there killing our animals and poisoning them as well as us.

This pic is on a patch of grass between some dorms on the Texas A&M University campus (it looks significantly worse in real life than in the pic) shame on you students not picking up after yourself in the place you live, and shame on the university for simply letting their staff mow over all the trash instead of picking it up first. Also I spent a few minutes picking up the most noticeable trash…
