✨Rosie✨ is here with a quick summer skin check reminder! 🐾🍉🏖️☀️
With recent reports of screwworm cases in Texas, I wanted to share a few things pet owners should keep an eye on this summer.
Screwworms are fly larvae that can infest open wounds or irritated skin. Unlike typical maggots, they feed on living tissue, which means wounds can become serious very quickly if left untreated.
While cases are still uncommon, summer heat, moisture, hot spots, skin irritation, and untreated wounds can increase risk — ESPECIALLY IN OUTDOOR PETS!
Please check your pets regularly for:
• Hot spots or wounds that suddenly worsen
• Strong odor coming from irritated skin
• Excessive licking/chewing
• Drainage or swelling
• Any visible larvae/maggots in wounds
Areas to check regularly:
• Ears
• Hot spots
• Under mats
• Feet/nail injuries
• Skin folds
• Rear end/tail area
Most skin issues are NOT screwworm-related, but early detection of any wound or infection is always important. If you notice a wound that looks painful, rapidly worsening, or unusual, contact your veterinarian promptly.
As always, I will continue checking pets carefully during grooming appointments and will let owners know if we notice anything concerning. Stay safe & give your pups extra belly rubs from me 🫶🏻🐾
