One thing we’ve learned living on the farm, plans are suggestions. The sheep make the final decisions.

Lambing season usually last 3-4 weeks. This year it was longer…we had a few surprise lambs that came from our yearling ewes.

Wool Washing Tip: Temperature Matters

When scouring wool, we aim for a water temperature between 140–160°F. Lanolin begins to break down at around 120°F, but higher temperatures are usually needed in the wash sinks or tubs to keep the water from cooling too quickly during the wash process.

If the water is too cool, the lanolin can redeposit onto the fiber instead of washing out.

Every fleece is different. We typically work with medium and coarser wools, which are often a little easier to scour than finer, greasier fleeces. For those finer fleeces, we prefer to keep the wash water closer to 160°F to help remove the lanolin more effectively.

It’s also important to avoid drastic temperature changes between wash and rinse baths, as that can cause some felting.

I admit it, I judge sheep by their fleece but to be fair, fleece is my job. One of the things I love most about wool is the variety. No two breeds are exactly alike, and those differences are what make wool such a fascinating fiber to work with.

Divide your fleece into manageable portions before washing.

Washing an entire fleece is much easier when it’s broken into smaller batches. We typically wash 2–3 pounds per sink using mesh bags, but that may not be ideal for your set up.

If you’re new to washing wool, or you’re working with buckets, tubs, or a single utility sink, start with smaller batches, even just 1 pound at a time. Smaller amounts are easier to handle, easier to rinse, and can help you learn the process without feeling overwhelmed.

Every setup is different, so don’t be afraid to start small and find what works best for you and your space.
