HORSEMANSHIP IS ABOUT THE HORSE

Horsemanship is not defined by the saddle you ride in, the discipline you participate in, or whether you ride Western or English. The equipment and style may change, but the horse does not.

True horsemanship is about understanding the horse in front of you—how he thinks, how he learns, how he regulates himself, and how he responds to pressure and release. It is about developing communication, trust, confidence, balance, and a willing partnership.

Whether you are riding a ranch horse, a reiner, a dressage horse, a jumper, or a young c**t, the fundamentals remain the same. We should strive to create a horse that understands what is being asked, stays mentally and emotionally available, and can carry that understanding into whatever job we give him.

The goal is not to make the horse fit our discipline. The goal is to develop the horse to the best of his ability.

Good horsemanship transcends disciplines. It isn’t Western or English—it is simply about the horse.

Enjoy the Journey

The little pieces—or sometimes the big pieces—we pick up along the way are what the journey is really all about.

Recently, I had a conversation with one of my mentors and asked him what I could be doing better for my horses.

If you know me, you know I’m pretty serious, short, and straightforward. I expected him to give me something technical—maybe something about my seat, timing, legs, feel, or one of the million things any horseman can continue to improve. Knowing that he has a similar personality, I figured I was going to get a pretty straightforward answer.

His response was the last thing I expected.

He simply said:

“Just enjoy the journey. It’s a long one.”

That answer has probably helped me more recently than any other piece of information I’ve been given.

Sometimes, we get so caught up in trying to be perfect that we forget to appreciate what we’ve already accomplished. We become so focused on where we want to be tomorrow that we forget to enjoy where we are today.

We talk so much about growth and what’s next that we can forget to actually live in the process.

The road is long. Always do your best. Always strive to improve. But don’t put so much pressure on yourself that you forget to enjoy it.

You can always “do better.” 😂 (Inside joke.)

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so stop acting like it should be.

What’s funny is that we understand this when it comes to horses. We don’t expect perfection from them overnight. We understand that their development is a process—a progression built one piece at a time. Yet as humans, we’ll absolutely tear ourselves apart if we aren’t the GOAT within 30 days.

We need to give ourselves some of the same patience we give our horses.

Chase your dreams. Be thankful for where you are. Never stop learning, never stop growing, and always strive to do better—but don’t forget to enjoy the journey.

Because when it’s all said and done, it was never just about the destination.

It’s about the journey.
