My new volunteer at the farm. Ella❤️! She and her mom come TWO times a week. Their jobs mainly concist of feeding lucky the horse her 2nd meal for the day cause I can see her ribs still after this winter. and with time Ella will be able ( should be able) to see the effects of her sticktoitiveness!! I’ll be doing the other nights. Ella’s mom Kassandra came up with and bought the ties to hang the bucket of special feed up high so butter scotch the goat can’t reach!! Perfect!!

I’m doing things differently this year! Well each of the 22 years of pumpkin patch I’ve adjusted, experimented or put in place something I’ve learned in the winter! Pumpkin/ winter squash DO NOT like their roots disturbed. So as they sprout in the green house I willsimultaneously harden them off so they can get in the ground before their roots get to big and break out of their little peet pots! They were started in the greenhouse later than usual this year for that same reason!

If you know my farm and lil’ pie company you probably have seen young girls manning “the patch”, working my volunteer hours with pop club at Kootenai county farmers market, or have seen their work of prepping fruit for pies or puting pie boxes together. With their mom’s assistance, they come to me young with an interest in what I do.
Well that’s exactly what happened with this little delight of an angel. Meet Ella, the new addition to my team of girls, better known as my help! Her mom reached out saying Ella loves anything farm and would love to volenteer in any way. Ella’s not 3 yet so hmmm what can we come up with. I do get this a lot but depending on how stressed I am, I quite often say no. But I had something perfect. And after meeting her and her mom I believe it was meant to be! Ella ( and her mom) is going to help me put some weight on my horse lucky. She seems skinny to me and I’ve made it one of my goals this spring. They will come once a week to do a 2nd feeding for the day and I will do the 2nd feeding the other days of the week. We talked yesterday about me getting grain just for lucky ( not all the other animals), the over all plan,
and how hopefully we will be able to SEE the results of our hard work. We also talked about then, if Ella’s up to it, lucky could use some brushing!!

Ya know those farm fresh fruit pies I base my little business on…. Well many begin during these winter months with cleaning out the chicken coop, composting the nutrient rich bedding, or in my strawberry patch’s case, side dressing the plants early, when the dirt can be worked!
