Research shows that the bond you share with your dog may have measurable effects on mental health. A 2024 study in JAMA Network Open examined 214 midlife and older women.

Researchers used the Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale to measure how strongly participants felt connected to their dogs.

Women who scored higher on attachment reported fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety, with the strongest benefits seen in those who had experienced early life adversity.

The biological pathways are becoming clearer. Interacting with dogs increases oxytocin, which calms the amygdala, reduces cortisol, and supports emotional regulation.

Harvard researchers add that simply petting a dog can lower stress hormones and activate brain regions linked to mood control. While the study focused on women, it highlights a broader principle: secure bonds, whether with people or pets, help the brain build resilience.
