Miss Pearl on her 30-day ultrasound and twin check, with a single healthy baby mule! Only 1 in 10,000 twin pregnancies in the horse result in two foals that survive. It is important to have mares examined by ultrasound before day 32. After day 32, if a twin pregnancy is detected and one of the embryos is terminated, should the remaining embryo not survive, mares may not return to a normal cyclic estrus for 5 months, so effectively the breeding season is lost. We strongly advise that mares are examined by ultrasound on days 14 and 30 after ovulation.

Surgery was successfully performed by Dr. Ted Vlahos and Dr. Kylie Galla along with the amazing team at Yellowstone Equine Hospital. Broken bones in horses can often be repaired, and should no longer be considered a death sentence! 😊🐴
