Halloween is full of excitement for families. Costumes, candy, doorbells, decorations, and lots of visitors! But for your dog, spooky season can bring some unexpected challenges.

**Should your dog go trick or treating with the family or enjoy a quiet evening at home?**

The answer depends on YOUR dog!

🐾 **Consider your dog's comfort.** Are they comfortable around strangers, costumes, children, and unfamiliar sounds?

🎃 **Practice before Halloween.** Walking politely, greeting visitors, and settling when the doorbell rings are skills you can teach during everyday routines.

👻 **Give your dog choices.** Not every dog enjoys crowds or excitement. Staying home in a comfortable space may be the better choice.

🍬 **Make safety a priority.** Keep candy out of reach, secure doors, and make sure your dog has proper identification.

September 20 through 26 is Adopt a Less-Adoptable Pet Week.

They may wait longer for someone to notice them, but they have just as much love to give.

I meet families like this more often than you might think.

A dog gets labeled as stubborn, hardheaded, or unwilling to listen. But when we take a closer look, we often discover that everyone in the family is communicating a little differently.

One person allows jumping. Another doesn't.

One person says "Down." Another says "Off."

One person rewards the behavior. Another corrects it.

From your dog's point of view, the rules keep changing.

Consistency doesn't mean being perfect. It means helping your dog understand what to expect.
