Today, we are heading out to visit our sweet Pia at prehab.
We miss having her here with us and it absolutely breaks our hearts realizing that Pia has now spent more time at prehab than what she has spent here with us at Portly Pony Farm Sanctuary. We rescued her with hopes of giving her a beautiful life, and instead, we've had to entrust her care to others while she fights for the chance at that future.
We are sad that she isn't here with us, but today we are reminding ourselves of something incredibly important...
She isn't THERE anymore, either.
This picture shows the life Pia left behind. Look closely at the little shack on the left. That was her shelter. A makeshift structure built from wooden skids with a metal roof. Inside, it was a dirt floor covered with manure, without even a clean place for her to lie down. Look at the ground around it. No grass, just dirt, mud, and scattered patches of weeds.
This was Pia's world. This was all she knew for at least the last 6 months.
As heartbreaking as it is to think about the life she endured, we also know that Pia is one of the lucky ones. She got out. So many other horses and ponies are living in conditions just like these, suffering, largely unseen by the world around them.
We spend so much time focusing on Pia's future that we haven't shared much about her past. But we think it's important that people understand where she came from, what she has already overcome, and why we are fighting so hard to give her the life she deserves.
In the coming days, we'll share more about Pia's progress at prehab and the plans for her surgery. But today, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on just how far this little girl has already come.
We don't know exactly what the road ahead will look like, but we hold onto the hope that one day Pia will come home to us, where she belongs, and spend many happy years surrounded by love, green pastures, and the comfort and security she was denied for far too long.
We can't change Pia's past. But we're doing everything we can to change her future.
And no matter what happens next, she will never have to live like this again.
