Public officials in Pennsylvania and across the northeast have issued air quality warnings as a result of the Canada wildfires, but what does that mean for our horses and large animals?

Here are some tips from Penn Vet New Bolton Center internal medicine experts to keep your four-legged friends healthy as we weather the smoky skies.

🐎Avoid or limit riding and exercise.

💧Clean water buckets frequently.

🧽Minimize additional exposure to dust particles by wetting hay before feeding and only cleaning stalls during turnout.

🩺Call your veterinarian immediately if you notice signs of respiratory disease, such as a cough, nasal discharge, and/or difficulty breathing.

If you are concerned about keeping your equine friends safe, please contact the office for medication today!

Or at least it will be later this week! Here are some pro-tips for keeping horses hydrated:

✅ make sure clean, fresh water is available at all times

✅ if you offer water with electrolytes make sure you also have plain water available as well

✅ if you have automatic waterers in fields check them frequently throughout the day to ensure they are working and that they have not been contaminated by wildlife (aka vultures 🤢)

✅ avoid exercise in peak heat

✅ monitor temp and respiration especially in older horses

Here are some of our favorite products that we use to help patients during hot weather: Summer Games electrolyte paste, Purina Replenimash, and AppleX electrolyte powder.
