Reminder – HWA’s Fun in the Field entry deadline is April 11 – that’s coming up quickly. The Holiday Inn Express in Bucryus, the headquarter hotel for our event is full, BUT the adjacent hotel, the Quality Inn Bucyrus North is saving a block of rooms for HWA event participants until April 9th. That’s the Quality Inn Bucyrus North, 1515 N. Sandusky Ave., Bucyrus, OH 44820 Tell them you’re with the HWA group when you call for a room reservation at 419-330-8401.

HWA's Fun in the Field takes place April 25-26 at Elk Ridge Hunt Club in Bucyrus, OH. You’ll find the entry form and more information for Fun in the Field on our website, www.huntingworkingairedales.com Click on the links on the homepage to download what you need.

This event carries on HWA’s long tradition of promoting and encouraging the training of Airedales for field work. In fact, the photo posted here was taken exactly 13 years ago on March 25, 2013 at the HWA Nationals when the Nationals were held in spring. Our notes say the dog’s name was Aries, and he was owned by Michael Craig Todd. Though we’ve lost touch with Mr. Todd, if memory serves, he and Aries came to Ohio for the event from a western state (Colorado? Montana?). If you happen to know him, please say Howdy from his old HWA friends.

The 2026 Airedale Terrier Club of America Cooley Memorial Hunt Tests In Beaver Dam, WI May 15-17, are open for entries on Huntsecretary.com. As in years past, the AKC Spaniel (upland) tests filled to the 50 dog limits both days, the first day it opened. If you want to run your Airedale in these tests, you can still get in. All you have to do is enter your dog(s), get on the wait list, and email me or the event secretary. We will expand the number of dogs in the test to include your dog(s). Because these tests are being held by the national breed club, we are allowed to do that. If you did not get a premium for the Friday (Airedale Day) events via email, email me and I will send one to you. Those events are still open. See you in May?

The HWA Fun in the Field information available via the homepage of our website www.huntingworkingairedales.com has been slightly revised for clarification. In the original posting, details were given on activities such as Introduction to Bird Work for newcomers, and it was noted "others will work in the field." In the expanded information now posted, its noted that "experienced dogs will hunt with gunners in the field." We wanted to be sure that those bringing Airedales who are accustomed to being shot over will know that they will have full opportunities for finding, flushing and retrieving shot birds.

Plans for our Fun in The Field two-day event are:
Saturday’s events will include fur tracking in the morning, including how to set up a track, how to begin training, and actual tracking. New dogs will work on introduction to birds and others will work in the field.
Lunch will be served by the owners of the clubhouse around noon. They always have a good, prepared lunch along with dessert. You are also free to bring your own if you have dietary restrictions or other desires.
The day will end late afternoon. There is a pond available to us on the property so you may want to introduce your dog to water or try retrieving out of the water. This depends on where you are in your training. You may want to bring your boots and a towel!! Also, something to retrieve.
Folks will meet at Baker’s Pizza that evening. Everyone orders on their own and pays on their own. We will have our own room. If you’d rather go to one of the other restaurants in town you are welcome to do so. We just want a head count to best we can.
Sunday’s new dogs will continue with introduction to birds and others will work in the field. Sunday afternoon a search and rescue handler will describe and demonstrate some of the training techniques used in search for a person. She will assist the participates in the first steps of searching with their dogs. Bring special treats for this event.
