We are deeply saddened to share that Sooner, our beloved Bengal tiger, was humanely euthanized on the afternoon of May 14th. Following a recent physical exam, it was discovered that he was experiencing chronic kidney failure, and the difficult decision was made to let him go peacefully in order to preserve his quality of life.
Sooner was almost 16 years old, born on May 28th 2011, and was truly a remarkable part of the Hillcrest Park Zoo family. Over the years, he touched the hearts of so many staff, volunteers, and guests who had the privilege of knowing and admiring him.
Two years ago, Sooner became one of the few tigers in the country to begin CBD treatment for his arthritis, which greatly improved his comfort and mobility. He especially loved spending his days taking long naps in the warm sun and relaxing in his pool—simple moments that brought him so much joy.
Sooner was more than just an animal in our care; he was a cherished ambassador, a source of wonder, and a deeply loved member of our zoo family. We feel incredibly fortunate to have shared so many years with such an extraordinary tiger, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In loving memory, please post your best Sooner pictures in the comments. 💕
