💯💯💯🐾🐕‍🦺
A German Shepherd Dog takes WORK. That amazing dog on the movie screen took more hard work that you can ever imagine. Not just in the extensive training, but in the impeccable genetics it was born with thanks to the breeders who dedicated their blood, sweat, tears and paychecks into the breed and into producing exceptional dogs.

"Odin" (Uber) is incredible because he is the product of dedicating one's life to the preservation and improvement of the German Shepherd, from the breeders to the trainers and everyone who poured love and effort into that dog along the way. He is not a dog that came from the neighbor down the street who had 2 purebred Shepherds and thought that was reason enough to breed them and make a couple hundred bucks per puppy.

All German Shepherds are special, but not all German Shepherds can be Odin/Uber, and going and buying a Shepherd puppy for $300 from an ad on Craigslist or a buddy of yours isn't going to give you an Odin/Uber. What it will do is continue to feed the irresponsible practice of backyard breeding that had resulted in countless Shepherds in the shelters. Many of them acquired on impulse, and then abandoned when the people who brought them home realize they can't handle them, and that they aren't a dog who they can give a 30 minute walk and then leave in their backyard for 8-10 hours or more a day, alone, while they are at work.

Don't get a German Shepherd because you saw a highly trained one in a movie. Research the breed extensively and figure out if you can give them what they need to thrive.

A PSA FROM A GSD OWNER ~
On September 23rd, 2026 "Heart of the Beast" starring Brad Pitt will debut in theaters across America.
Whenever a movie features an incredible dog, something predictable happens:
People leave the theater thinking, “I want THAT dog.”
And when that dog is a German Shepherd, I understand why.
They’re beautiful. Powerful. Loyal. Intelligent. Protective.
On the big screen, they can look like the coolest, easiest, most amazing dogs in the world.
But before you run out and get a German Shepherd because you fell in love with one in a movie, please understand this:
A German Shepherd is work.
A LOT of work.
I know because I’ve owned and loved German Shepherds for over 30 years. Actually let me correct myself . . . You don't own a German Shepherd, they own you.
The well-behaved dog you admire didn’t come that way by accident. German Shepherds need training, structure, exercise, attention, socialization, patience and consistency.
They need an owner who is willing to put in the time—not just during the adorable puppy stage, but for years.
They start shedding the first week of January and stop the last week of December and if you listen closely you can hear all the GSD owners laughing.
They’re strong. They will study you. They will learn your every move, and be there before you ask.
They’re intelligent enough to figure out what you’re doing wrong before you do.
They need physical exercise and mental stimulation.
And when you don’t give a German Shepherd a job, don’t worry:
They’ll find one. You just might not like the job they choose.
A German Shepherd can be one of the most extraordinary companions you’ll ever have. Their loyalty is unmatched, and the bond can be incredible.
But that relationship is earned through time, commitment, training and responsibility.
So enjoy the movie. Fall in love with the dog on the screen.
But please don’t choose a breed simply because Hollywood made it look cool.
Research the breed. Talk to German Shepherd owners. Speak with trainers. Visit a rescue. Be brutally honest about your lifestyle and the next 10–12 years of your life.
Because six months after the movie leaves the theater, that beautiful German Shepherd puppy may be a 70–90-pound adolescent who still needs you to show up every single day.
Dogs aren’t movie souvenirs.
If you decide a German Shepherd truly fits your life, wonderful. You’ll understand why so many of us love this breed so deeply.
But if you’re not ready for the work, do the dog—and yourself—a favor.
Admire the German Shepherd on the big screen. Don’t bring one home until you’re ready for the responsibility that comes with the star. 🐾

HAPPY 6TH BIRTHDAY 🎂 🎉🐾 to Chonk, Leia 🌈, Titus, Bell, Sage, Echo, Talia, and Remo!
The 2020 litter.

I can't believe it's been 6 years! You changed my life and gave me my lifeline in Chonk, and I am forever grateful to Jonas and Marvel for blessing me with him, as well as his siblings and the joy they bring their families.

🐾 SO YOU’RE GETTING INTO DOGS… WELL, BLESS YOUR HEART. 😂

Come on in, sugar. We’ve been expecting you. Go ahead and leave your money, free time and common sense at the door.

First thing you need to understand: you’re about to give up half your house and your entire life savings. The other half of the house will eventually go too—we just don’t want to scare you right off the bat.

And you better build some storage.

Because somehow 6 dogs require 30 crates, 60 bowls, 100 leashes, 47 collars, 14 grooming bags, 12 dog beds nobody sleeps in and one crate pan from 1997.

Can you throw that crate pan away?

ABSOLUTELY NOT.

It might fit something someday.

Before long, your living room is a kennel with a couch. Your dining room table is a grooming station. Your spare bedroom is a puppy nursery. And you haven’t eaten at your kitchen table since the Bush administration because that’s where the dog supplies live now.

Then there’s the garage.

Lord have mercy.

One day you’ll open that door and realize you’re one concerned neighbor away from appearing on Hoarders: Dog Show Edition.

Crates stacked to the ceiling. X-pens multiplying when nobody is looking. Grooming tables, dryers, chairs, coolers, totes and enough ribbons to decorate every pew at the First Baptist Church.

Your husband will eventually ask:

“Where am I supposed to park?”

Outside, Earl.

The dogs have a climate-controlled grooming area. Know your place. 😂

And let’s discuss finances.

You’ll stand in Walmart and say, “$5.98 for eggs?! Have these people lost their minds?”

Then drive straight to the pet store and spend $238 on dog food, shampoo and some supplement you can’t pronounce because somebody on Facebook said it makes coat grow.

The dogs eat premium food, fresh eggs, blueberries and supplements.

You’re eating a bologna sandwich over the sink.

Because we’re on a budget.

Then every six months you’ll make the big announcement:

“I’m cutting back on dogs and taking a break from showing.”

Your family won’t even look up anymore.

They’ve heard this lie before.

Three days later the premium list drops and you’re sitting there with a calculator figuring out whether the electric company really meant Friday.

Welcome to the dog world, darlin’.

The dogs now own your house, garage, weekends, vehicle, bank account and the last functioning nerve the Good Lord blessed you with.

And somehow, standing in the middle of all that foolishness, you’ll smile and say…

“I might keep this puppy.”

And THAT, my friends, is how you end up needing another crate. 😂😂😂🐾

Most people don't actually want a German Shepherd.

They want the idea of a German Shepherd.

They want the photo.

The look.

The image.

The powerful dog sitting perfectly beside its owner.

The loyal protector.

The fearless guardian.

The majestic animal that turns heads everywhere it goes.

Everybody wants that part.

What they don't want is what comes before it.

The training.

The consistency.

The structure.

The daily commitment.

The months of repetition.

The days when you're tired.

The days when you'd rather skip it.

The days when your German Shepherd decides to test every ounce of patience you possess.

People see the finished product.

They rarely see the work.

Nobody posts photos of waking up early to train.

Nobody posts videos of correcting bad habits for the hundredth time.

Nobody brags about the walks taken in the rain.

The socialization.

The boundaries.

The countless hours invested in building the dog they eventually show off online.

They just post the result.

And everyone else assumes it happened naturally.

It didn't.

A German Shepherd isn't born loyal.

They're born with the capacity for loyalty.

A German Shepherd isn't born obedient.

They're born with the potential for obedience.

A German Shepherd isn't born stable.

They're born with the potential to become stable.

What happens next depends on the human.

That's the part nobody likes talking about.

Because it's easier to blame the breed.

Easier to blame the dog.

Easier to say:

"He's stubborn."

"She's too much."

"This breed is difficult."

Maybe.

Or maybe the dog simply became whatever the owner invested into it.

The truth is, German Shepherds are mirrors.

They expose inconsistency.

They expose laziness.

They expose weak leadership.

They expose shortcuts.

And they reward effort.

Massively.

A well-raised German Shepherd is one of the most incredible companions on earth.

A poorly-raised German Shepherd can become one of the most challenging.

The difference often isn't the dog.

It's the work.

That's why so many Shepherds end up in shelters.

People fall in love with the image.

Then reality shows up.

Reality barks.

Reality sheds.

Reality needs exercise.

Reality needs training.

Reality needs structure.

Reality needs leadership.

And suddenly the dog that looked amazing in the photos feels like too much responsibility.

The irony?

The very things people complain about are usually the things that make German Shepherds special.

Their intelligence.

Their drive.

Their awareness.

Their loyalty.

Their need to be involved.

Those traits don't come with an off switch.

You either embrace them...

Or they become frustrating.

So when someone tells me they want a German Shepherd, I always wonder:

Do you want the dog?

Or do you want the image?

Because those are two very different things.

One requires admiration.

The other requires commitment.

And only one of them creates the kind of German Shepherd everyone dreams about.

👇 Be honest:

What's the one thing nobody warned you about before getting a German Shepherd?
