Splash’s Eye Progress Update

The update all Splash fans have been waiting for is here! Six weeks ago, Splash started his intensive treatment routine three times a day with his antifungal, anti-inflammatory (for pain), and antibiotic medications.

During week one, his poor eye was closed nearly 90% of the day, which made taking photos almost impossible. You could clearly see the deep hole/ulcer on the eye—it looked like an entire chunk was missing. By week two, he completely accepted the routine as long as he was properly reimbursed with treats. The ulcer began filling in, the heat and pain subsided, and he was able to keep the eye open about 50% of the day.

By week four, the crater completely healed over and the pain is entirely gone! He now keeps his eye open all day and is officially back to his spunky, attention-seeking self.

Will he always have a cloudy spot in that eye? For those of you who know Piper, if you look closely at her left eye, you will see a similar, now-faded cloudy spot from an ulcer she had at two years old. While scar tissue can slightly affect peripheral vision, it certainly doesn't slow Piper down from doing her job, and Splash will be just fine too. The main win is that the pain is gone and the cornea has fully closed!

Appaloosas, UV Protection & Eye Care

Appaloosas are genetically predisposed to ocular challenges, most notably Equine Recurrent Uveitis (ERU) and ocular squamous cell carcinoma, making vigilant eye care essential for the breed. When managing an active corneal ulcer or protecting sensitive eyes:

Fly Masks: Provide a critical physical barrier against flies carrying bacteria and fungi, while significantly reducing harsh UV rays that cause pain and inflammation.

Shaded Turnout: Protects the healing eye from direct sunlight and photophobia (light sensitivity), allowing the cornea to repair without continuous UV irritation.

Our next horse spotlight is one of our longest barn residents, Piper!

Piper is a barn favorite but can seem frustrating at times. Some people see her pink skin and short tail and write her off. But put a fake tail on her and send her into the show ring, and this girl is a winner! The wall of ribbons, sashes, champion titles, chairs, and buckles proves it.

Piper requires her riders to ask the right things. Want a trot? You better tell her exactly what speed you want. Want a circle? You need to show her the correct size. She has spent her whole life helping create great riders, and she isn't going to give away the answers for free.

But when you finally figure her out and earn those ribbons, you know you truly deserved them. Those ribbons represent the work you put into building a partnership and learning how to communicate with her.

Because this 1,000 pound, googly eyed, toddler just wants to please you.

Today was the second of our three show series, and while it may have been hot, these riders did us all proud!
We have, hands down, the best competitors around. I heard so many youth building each other up, celebrating their fellow riders, and using the best manners. We had smart riders who know how to ride their ponies and who do not get tripped up by the hard patterns or two point requests.

At a Gypsy's Gait show, if you need a reride, you get it. You will not change your placings, but if you want to learn, our team of instructors and a fantastic judge are always here to help.

If you want to be a better rider, it starts here.

It starts where everyone loves and supports you. Where we literally cheer and whistle. Where we tear up for the ride we knew you could master. Where you get real feedback on what you need to work on.

Now that we have a few show seasons under our belts, we have judges telling us they see real growth in these riders. That is what this is all about.

Thank you to Parkin’ Latte: South Carolina and Iron City Bbq Co. for keeping us fed and caffeinated today! You are a crowd favorite and we are so grateful for you!

Thank you to our parents for the endless work you do to help make your kids successful.

Thank you, Jan Bellows, for always being the judge who pushes our riders to be their best. You believe they can do it, and because you believe in them, they do it. We always appreciate your feedback and the way you challenge our riders to grow!

Thank you, Clark and Nancy Young Curry , for providing us with the most beautiful venue in the county, hands down.

And thank you to my team of absolutely selfless volunteers who know my brain without me even needing to ask. You set up, break down, answer questions, announce, scribe, fix outfits, scoop p**p, drag arenas, hold horses, get lunches, count points, hand out ribbons, and handle all of the other million things I could never do alone. I am so incredibly blessed to have you all.

And finally, thank you to our riders for working so hard and loving these ponies so much.

No matter where you ride, who teaches you, what horse you love, or what discipline you choose, you are the very foundation of our equestrian community. You are family, and I love seeing you all come together and love each other so big.

We’re excited to have Gracie with Two in Time Photography at our show this Saturday!

Gracie will be capturing all the action, and photos will be available for purchase after the show. We’ll post the gallery link on our page as soon as it’s available.

What a wonderful way to support a local photographer while getting beautiful photos of your favorite rider and horse. We can’t wait to see everyone this Saturday!
