We've had a few requests for any updates on the German Shepherd spotted who appeared malnourished and covered in porcupine quills on Munger Trail on Wednesday afternoon. He was spotted by a few people reaching out to Jay Cooke State Park, Missing Pets In The Northland, Carlton County Sheriff's Office, and our page (CCAR). Thankfully a Deputy with the Carlton County Sheriff's Office was able to secure him safely and reached out.
Although it's hard to see from the photos, Justin had many quills in his legs/paws, face, snout. Some of these were not as deep and the Deputy was able to safely remove. We were able to reach out to one of our vet partners Arrowhead Lane Pet Clinic in Moose Lake where Dr Angela Urban agreed to fit him into her schedule today (after a full day of appointments for CCAR fosters yesterday!). Our intake coordinator Meredith was able to arrange to pick him up. She named this sweet dog JUSTIN and gave him a ride to the vet. He will be on a re-feeding plan to help safely build back up his health and weight.
He needed to be sedated for a thorough exam and to have remaining quills safely removed, and getting some blood work completed as well. We don't know how long he may have been wandering or if anyone may be looking for this guy. Adult unaltered male, no microchip, no collar or ID. Proof of ownership needed to claim. Any information as to where he may have come from, his age, or history would be appreciated. He is currently on a mandated 5 day stray hold. We will be working on a foster placement, assessing temperament and interaction with other dogs and cats. If he is not claimed we will complete vetting to get him altered and up to date on vaccines and ready to find a new home.
We know our adoption fees cannot fully cover the cost of care, especially when animals come in with no records and in need of medical attention.
