Small in Stature, Larger Than Life ā¤ļø
It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of our beloved miniature horse, Dash.

Born right here at 13 Hands, Dash held a special place in our hearts from the very first day. He may have been small in stature, but there was nothing small about his personality! Strong-willed, spirited, and full of attitude, we’re pretty sure he never got the memo that he was a miniature horse. He could hold his own with the big boys, and in his mind, he was every bit as big as they were.

For several years, Dash required specialized care and close attention from our dedicated team, who worked tirelessly to help him stay healthy and enjoy the life he deserved.

Sadly, an unexpected medical emergency brought a devastating prognosis, and we made the heartbreaking decision to let him go peacefully.

He was far too young, and we were not ready to say goodbye.

From his very first breath to his final moments, Dash knew love, kindness, and the comfort of being home.

We will miss his feisty spirit, his determination, and the enormous presence of one very little horse.

Run free, sweet boy. You were never little in our eyes. ā¤ļø

Honoring Dash’s Memory, Helping Others in Need

Losing Dash is another heartbreaking reminder of how quickly an unexpected medical emergency can change everything.

When we lost our beloved free-roaming horse Hitch, we established Hitch’s Memorial Emergency Fund to help provide critical veterinary care for equines facing unexpected medical emergencies.

Dash received years of specialized care, and when his final medical emergency arose, our team did everything possible to help him. While we couldn't change the outcome, the costs of providing that care remain.

We are asking for your help to cover Dash's medical expenses through a donation to Hitch's Memorial Emergency Fund. Your generosity will not only help us with the costs of his care but also support our ability to respond when another animal urgently needs us.

Please make a gift in Dash's memory by donating to Hitch’s Memorial Emergency Fund.

Thank you for standing beside us through both the joyful moments and the heartbreaking ones. Your kindness and generosity make our work possible.

Sparky is an early-mid teens Friesian Standardbred cross who has come a long way since arriving in spring 2025. He’s gained some much needed weight and still has room to blossom even more. Sparky has been evaluated under saddle and will benefit from additional conditioning and groundwork as he builds strength and confidence. He is a good prospect for trail riding and stands well for the farrier and dentist.

With patience and consistent handling, Sparky has the potential to become a wonderful partner for the right adopter!

Memo was one of the worst neglect cases we’ve seen. He had been living alone with little to no care until a concerned neighbor reported him just in time. Since arriving at the rescue, Memo has completely transformed. He is full of life (and plenty of s***k) and is now hoping to find a home of his own.

In the meantime, he relies on sponsors to help cover his farrier, dental, and daily care needs. Sponsors receive digital updates and special perks as their sponsorship level increases. Most importantly, you become part of the reason a horse like Memo gets a second chance at life.

The average American horse changes owners around seven times in its lifetime, and less than 9% of horses stay in one home forever. Many even travel across the country as they change hands. Some find safety, but countless others end up in auctions. With no bidders, they’re purchased by kill buyers. It’s a heartbreaking reality far too common in the equestrian world.

That’s where rescues step in. As we care for more seniors and non‑riding horses who can’t offer the traditional value of a riding partner, we’ve made it easier than ever for families to welcome a companion horse homeā¤ļø

Although their days with a saddle may be behind them, their ability to offer connection and deep companionship is stronger than ever.

These horses thrive on life’s simple joys and remind us that horsemanship is so much more than just riding.
