Recently, our highly experienced surgeon, Dr. Herron, performed a delicate procedure to remove a severe cyst from a feline patient’s mammary gland. We are happy to report that the surgery was a complete success, and our sweet patient is resting comfortably and recovering beautifully!
However, cases like this serve as an important educational moment for our community.
The Preventative Power of Spaying
We share these images not to shock, but to educate. The absolute best thing you can do as a pet owner to protect your cat from mammary cysts and tumors is to have them spayed.
Here are the facts regarding feline mammary health:
The Hormonal Link: Mammary cysts and tumors in cats are heavily influenced by reproductive hormones (estrogen and progesterone).
Drastic Risk Reduction: Spaying a female cat before her first heat cycle (usually around 6 months of age) reduces her risk of developing mammary cancer by an incredible 91%. Spaying before her second heat cycle reduces the risk by 86%.
High Malignancy Rates: Unlike dogs, where mammary tumors are often benign, up to 85–90% of mammary masses in cats are malignant (cancerous). Prevention is critical.
Protect Your Pet Today
Spaying and neutering are not just about preventing unwanted litters; they are highly effective, life-saving forms of preventative medicine. By removing the source of these hormones early, you drastically decrease the chances of your pet having to undergo an invasive mass removal surgery like the one shown above.
If your pet is not yet spayed or neutered, or if you ever feel an unusual lump along your cat’s abdomen, please do not wait.

Meet Amber! ✨
Amber has been a cornerstone of our technician team since 2020! Over the years, she has been fiercely dedicated to creating a safe, loving, and comforting atmosphere for every single patient that walks through our doors. 🐾
When she isn’t at the clinic providing exceptional care, Amber is hard at work studying for her bachelor’s degree! 🎓 In her well-deserved downtime, you can find her expressing her creativity through painting 🎨, enjoying quality time with her loved ones, or soaking up cuddles with her two adorable dogs, Milo and Princess. 🐶❤️
We are so incredibly grateful for Amber’s experience, gentle touch, and the calming energy she brings to the clinic. Make sure to say hello to Amber during your next visit! 👋

Meet Carol! 🌟

Since joining the CAAH family in October 2024, Carol has been doing it all—she is cross-trained as both a rockstar receptionist and an incredible veterinary technician!

When she isn’t studying computer programming and cybersecurity, drawing, or sipping on a much-needed coffee ☕, she’s busy caring for her own mini-zoo at home (two cats, four parakeets, and a turtle!). Carol’s biggest passion is learning new things and applying her knowledge to help others. Above all else, she prioritizes sharing deep compassion and empathy for our fur companions and their families. ❤️

We recently asked Carol: “How do we make sure that pet parents feel informed, confident & included when discussing pet treatment plans?”

Here is what she had to say:

“Because I get to work both at the front desk and in the back as a technician, I’m able to support families through every single step of their visit. Having a diverse pet family myself, I know exactly what it’s like to be on the other side of the exam table! I always make sure to take the time to truly connect, break down the details, and answer any questions. It’s all about empathy—making sure you feel heard, supported, and treated as a true partner in your best friend’s health journey.”

Next time you’re at Clifton Ave Animal Hospital, be sure to say hi to Carol! 👋🐾
