It’s been a whirlwind since these little guys arrived. As you know, we had a rough start with a needed C-section and losing two puppies. While we hoped and prayed that was the only hardship we would face with this litter, it wasn’t the end. The first night home Heidi accidentally laid on a puppy through the night. We were devastated that happened. We believe she was really groggy and weak from surgery. I of course felt so guilty about it that I moved a cot into the whelping box and slept there for last week to keep closer tabs. As breeders, we do the best we can to help prepare and plan for puppies and their safety during their time with us. This includes installing a “pig rail” inside the box to help prevent a mama dog from laying on a puppy. Sadly, it’s not always full proof. As much as I was tempted to sit in the sadness of it all, we must press on because we have five little pups that need our 100% right now (and of course two little girlies that do too).
Honestly the stress of how we got started and the losses we encountered stole some of the joy that I typically find in my puppies the first few days. I finally felt like Thursday was the first day I just got to sit in the feeling of enjoying the puppies and the whole experience of having them again. It’s a reminder of why we choose to do it. We love watching them and their natural instincts, seeing them develop and start to bark and growl, their little puppy smell and of course puppy breath, the little tail wags when they nurse, the way they all get in a puppy pile to sleep, and this time seeing my little girls love them too makes me happy. These five puppies are sweet as ever too! It’s going to be hard to let them go!
Since these guys were born on April 1 and we were watching the Artemis II launch during their arrivals, we thought we would give them some temporary space themed names. Come meet the “Fur-tastic Five”: Cosmo, Nova, Luna, Stella, and Comet.
Enjoy the pics of all the puppy things lately!
