Our next Canine Good Citizen Workshop starts Saturday, November 7 at 3pm, and runs six weeks.

CGC is the AKC's certification for a dog who can handle the real world — a stranger saying hello, another dog walking past, being left with someone else for three minutes without falling apart. It is the test most therapy dog programs start with, and a lot of landlords and insurers recognize it.

$355 covers the six Saturday classes plus two private lessons, which you can use to work on one specific skill or to take the test itself. Registration is open now and closes Friday, November 6.

One more thing, purely for fun. From today through Halloween, any pup who comes in wearing a costume gets an entry into a drawing to win a Paw 'n Play treat puzzle — the one where your dog presses the paw handles to shake the food loose, and then does it again because it worked. Nothing to buy and nothing to sign up for — just turn up dressed and we will take your picture.

Riley's paws are her piggies. We started calling them that, but somewhere along the way she worked out what was meant — and now when asked her to use her piggies, she does.

Sound on for this one.

The Paw 'N Play has a lever on the front, and it takes a real press with a paw to open. Nosing it doesn't get you far. For Riley, the reason this works is that putting a foot on something on purpose is a thing she already knows how to do.

We want to be straight with you about that part. Teaching a dog to offer a paw deliberately is not a quick trick. Some dogs are natural pawers and pick it up fast. Others take some time, and a few are so committed to using their nose for everything that it's a real project. There's no timeline we can promise you, and we'd rather say so than have you come home frustrated on day three.

But here's why it's worth it. We've spent the last few Fridays on the two tanks — a tired, happy dog needs the body worn out and the brain worn out, and it's the brain that's still running at eight at night. A toy your dog had to learn her way into fills both at once. It stops being something you hand her to keep busy and becomes something the two of you built.

Honest warning: this is the hardest of the four we've shown you. If your dog is new to puzzles, start easier and work up. Nothing sours a dog on this stuff faster than something she can't crack.

If a paw cue is something you'd like to work on, come talk to one of us — we'll show you where to start and what progress actually looks like along the way.

How long does your dog take to eat dinner? For a lot of dogs the honest answer is about nine seconds.

That's twice a day, every day, that something could be happening and isn't.

We've been talking about the two tanks — a tired, happy dog needs the body emptied *and* the brain emptied, and it's the brain that's usually still full when the 7-to-10pm witching hours roll around. Here's the version of that work that costs you nothing extra.

The Bee Hive doesn't give food up to any single trick. Riley has to nudge it, tip it, and paw it from every side to empty it, and because no one move does the job, she keeps having to try a different one. That's the whole mechanism: a dog who has to keep changing her approach is a dog who's thinking.

The obvious win is slowing down a gulper. The better one is the timing. Serve dinner out of this at six instead of the bowl and you've spent twenty minutes of mental energy right before the window where it usually comes out sideways.

And it's free enrichment. Not one extra calorie — it's food you were already putting down, just doing more work on the way out.

This is the one we point new people toward, because it's forgiving. A dog who gets frustrated and quits on harder puzzles will usually stay with this one.

It's 8:30pm. You're finally sitting down. She drops a toy in your lap, you throw it, she brings it back in nine seconds, and you both know this isn't going to end.

That's the mental tank talking, not the physical one.

A tired, happy dog needs both emptied. Fetch and walks handle the body. But a dog who has burned energy without ever having to *think* is still wound up at 8:30 — and the witching hours between 7 and 10pm are when you find out.

The Snoop is the one that surprises people. It looks simple. Then a dog tries it.

The opening is deep and sits off to one side, so there's no shaking it loose and no lucky angle that dumps everything out. Riley has to work out how it wants to be pushed, commit to that, and stay with it when it doesn't pay off right away. Watch the clip — the part that wears her out isn't the pushing, it's the concentrating.

That's the piece people miss. Staying with a hard problem instead of quitting is a skill, and it's one that carries straight over into class. A dog who can tolerate a little frustration is a dog who can learn something new without shutting down.

In stock at 1603 Route 9. Stop in and we'll show you how to load it — there's a real knack to making it hard enough to matter without making it hard enough that they walk away.

POV: You spent months training your puppy…only for them to wake up one morning like, “Sit? Sorry, have we met?” 🐶😂

✅Yesterday: Nailed every cue.
🍁Today: Deeply invested in a leaf.
❓Tomorrow: Honestly, TBD.

But here’s what’s really happening: Your dog hasn’t forgotten their training. Their adolescent brain is still developing, hormones are shifting, emotions can run bigger, and the environment has become way more interesting. When excitement, frustration, or uncertainty rises, accessing familiar skills becomes harder.

💡Pro tip: Be careful not to create a poisoned cue. This happens when a word like “come” or “sit” is repeated, pressured, or followed by something unpleasant so often that your dog begins associating it with frustration instead of success. Say the cue once, lower the difficulty, and reward the response. If the cue has already developed negative baggage, introduce a fresh word and rebuild it through short, positive practice sessions.

The training is still in there…no cap. Your teenager just needs patience, consistency, and a little help finding it. 💯

Low-key trained. High-key left alone during the fourth quarter. 🏈🪴Adolescent dogs have energy, curiosity, and a remarkable talent for finding their own entertainment.

💡Pro tip: Before settling in for the game, give your dog a training session, enrichment activity, or sniff-filled walk. Meeting their needs helps set them up for success.🐾

“Why is that boot lowkey giving villain energy?…I’m gonna need some treats before I process this.” 🐶

🗓️ Yesterday: totally fine.
🗓️ Today: that yellow boot is clearly suspicious.

Adolescent dogs can experience new fear periods, causing familiar sights, sounds, or objects to suddenly feel unfamiliar.

💡Pro tip: Give your dog space, pair the scary thing with something positive, and let them investigate at their own pace. Never force the interaction. Confidence grows through choice…not pressure.

Your “teenage” dog is collecting data. Yes, they’re taking notes. 👀📝

During adolescence, dogs might start experimenting with what works.

✔️Jumping gets attention? Noted.👀
✔️Barking makes you look over? Interesting.🤔
✔️Pulling harder gets me there faster? Filing that away.📂

Every interaction gives them information..

➡️ I did this.
➡️ Something happened.
➡️ Should I try it again?

That’s why consistency matters so much during this stage. If a behavior sometimes works, even accidentally, it may be worth repeating.

Our job? Make the behaviors we want to see more often work better than the ones we don’t. Reward the check-in. Reinforce four paws on the floor. Make coming when called worth it.

Just remember…they’re not just “testing you.” They’re just learning what works. 🧠🐾

09/04/2026

We’re about to tell you to throw your dog’s breakfast on the floor.

No cap. It’s called scatter feeding..and behavioral science is here for it. 🔥🧠

Instead of serving their entire meal in a bowl, scatter some kibble across a safe space and let your dog sniff, search and forage. Why? Sniffing and foraging tap into natural behaviors, provide mental enrichment and give that busy adolescent brain something productive to focus on.

Give the nose an assignment before the teenage brain creates one of its own. 👀😂

💡PRO TIP: Start easy. Choose a quiet, safe space, scatter the food and let your dog follow their nose. As they get the hang of it, you can make the search more challenging.

And pay attention: if your normally food-motivated dog is too distracted or overwhelmed to search, that’s information, too.

Sometimes enrichment doesn’t need to be complicated.

Scatter. Sniff. Search. Reset. 🐾 Indian Trail Zoom Room 👏

🚨 EVERYONE REMAIN CALM. OUR SOCIALS HAVE NOT BEEN HACKED. 🚨

We have, however, made the questionable decision to take creative direction from a few Gen Alphas during our September “Teenage Phase” campaign.

So if you see words like mid, sus, delulu, or no cap popping up around here… congratulations. You’re learning a new language with us. 🤣…and yes, all slang remains under the watchful eye of Certified Professional Dog Trainers. The lingo may be questionable. The training advice isn’t.

But in all seriousness, adolescence is an incredibly important chapter in a young dog’s life. It can bring big feelings, selective hearing, new fears, testing boundaries, and plenty of moments that leave pet parents wondering, “Wait… what happened to my puppy?”

They’re still in there. They’re just growing up. 🧡

Throughout September, we’re here to help you understand what’s happening, why it’s happening, and how the right training and support now can help build confidence, strengthen your bond, and set your dog up for success well beyond the teenage phase.

Welcome to the chaos era. We’ve got you. No cap. 🐾

Sooo Mom says puppy class is “an investment in my teenage years.”

IDK what that means…but I get to see my trainer Sophie, so this is lowkey fire. 🔥🐶

For the older humans: that means very exciting. Nothing is actually on fire. The fire department does not need to be involved. 🚒😂

Next stop🚙: Zoom Room for puppy class. No cap….(we can save the definition for “no cap” on another post) 🐾
