🏡🐾 Bean has entered the chat... and surprisingly, he didn't file a complaint about visitors today. 🐾🏡

Bean is a dog with **BIG feelings** about guests coming into his home.

You know that friend who needs a minute to warm up to new people? Bean needs a few minutes, a solid game plan, and perhaps a formal written introduction. 😂

But as you can see from this photo, Bean has officially welcomed Valarie into his inner circle—and he's doing it with enthusiasm!

Look at that face. That's not the expression of a dog plotting an eviction. That's the face of a dog saying, "Oh, it's YOU! Come on in!"

One of the best parts of behavior work is watching dogs realize they don't have to handle every situation with alarm bells and emergency meetings. Over time, Bean has been learning that visitors can predict good things, and that he can make choices that help him feel safe and comfortable.

Progress isn't always linear, and it's rarely instant. But moments like this? They're worth celebrating. 🎉

Way to go, Bean! From "Absolutely not" to "Welcome to my home, friend!" is a pretty impressive glow-up. ❤️

Let's clear up one of the biggest puppy myths out there...

🚫 Socialization is NOT dragging your puppy to every store, festival, brewery, farmer's market, soccer game, and family reunion within a 50-mile radius.

🚫 Socialization is NOT forcing your puppy to greet every person, dog, child, and squirrel they encounter.

In fact, that can sometimes create the very problems we're trying to prevent.

✅ Proper socialization is helping your puppy develop positive feelings about the world around them.

That means your puppy can:

🐾 Watch a dog walk by without needing to meet it
🐾 See a child on a scooter and remain calm
🐾 Observe a bicycle without filing a formal complaint
🐾 Hear a truck drive past and continue eating treats
🐾 Notice a stranger and feel safe

One of the most important skills you can teach a puppy is **neutrality**.

Not every dog is a friend.
Not every person is there to say hello.
Not every exciting thing requires participation.

The puppies that grow into the most successful adult dogs aren't necessarily the ones who met the most people and dogs.

They're often the ones who learned:
✨ The world is safe
✨ New things predict good stuff
✨ They can handle surprises
✨ Calm is an option

So next time you're out with your puppy, remember:

🐾 I'm getting a puppy soon... and you know what I'm doing?

Preparing.

🐾🚨 New blog drop: and yes, this one has some feelings behind it. 🚨🐾

This week gave me two very different, very real reminders of why we need to talk about ethical rescue practices.

1️⃣ I was publicly attacked for choosing to purchase a puppy from a **well-researched, ethical breeder**.
2️⃣ I had a behavior consultation with a client who was repeatedly **rejected by rescues**, gave up on adoption, and ultimately purchased a dog—who is now struggling with both behavioral challenges and genetic health issues.

Neither of those situations exists in a vacuum. They’re connected to a bigger conversation we’re not having honestly enough in animal welfare.

So I wrote about it.

📖 **New blog:**
**“Ethical Dog Rescue Practices: What Responsible Rescues Should Be Doing (and What They Should Stop Doing)”**

This isn’t a rescue-bashing post. It’s a *reality check* post.

Because when rescues:

* reject perfectly capable homes over arbitrary rules
* shame adopters publicly
* or make the process so hostile people opt out entirely

…those people don’t disappear.

They still get dogs.

Just not always from the places we would hope.

And when ethical adopters are pushed away, everyone loses—especially dogs.

If we actually care about reducing suffering and improving outcomes, we have to be willing to look at the full picture… not just the parts that fit a narrative.

Just a quick heads-up that I'm taking a little time away to recharge my batteries, refill my treat pouch, and probably spoil a few dogs along the way.

I'll be out of the office until **Tuesday, June 16th** and will respond to all calls, emails, texts, carrier pigeons, and social media messages when I return.

💛🐾 TILLY UPDATE: The Yellow Lab Chaos Committee Has Been Placed on Probation 🐾💛

Meet Tilly, a young Labrador Retriever with two major life goals:

1️⃣ Meet every single person immediately.
2️⃣ Meet every single dog immediately.

And if those goals are delayed by even 0.3 seconds? Well... Tilly has some *strongly worded opinions* about it. 😂

Tilly has been working hard in her Private Coaching sessions on learning that guests entering the home do **not** require an Olympic-level jumping performance, and that seeing another dog doesn't mean she needs to file a formal complaint with the neighborhood.

The good news? Tilly is making fantastic progress!

We're helping her learn:
✨ Four paws on the floor earns attention
✨ Calm behavior gets rewarded
✨ Not every dog is an invitation to a party
✨ Frustration is a feeling she can work through
✨ Being chill is actually kind of awesome

One of the biggest misconceptions about reactive dogs is that they're always fearful. In Tilly's case, her reactions are fueled by excitement and frustration. She desperately wants to interact, and we're teaching her that patience and self-control are skills worth having.

It's not always glamorous work. Sometimes dog training looks less like a movie montage and more like celebrating the fact that your dog saw another dog and didn't act like they just spotted a long-lost celebrity.

We're incredibly proud of this sweet, enthusiastic girl and her family for putting in the work. 💛

Keep it up, Tilly. The world may be your stage, but we're aiming for a little less Broadway and a little more library voice. 📚😂

Around here, we believe love is love, dogs are family, and everyone deserves to feel safe, seen, and celebrated—whether you have two legs or four. 🐶💖

Pride Month holds deep personal meaning for Valarie, who is a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community. This time of year isn’t just colorful celebrations (though we fully support the glitter and chaos) — it’s about visibility, acceptance, and the ongoing work of creating a world where everyone belongs exactly as they are.
