Fireworks season is right around the corner, and for many pets, that means stress, fear, and anxiety. Loud noises and bright flashes can lead to trembling, pacing, hiding, excessive panting, destruction, or even escape attempts.

If your pet struggles during fireworks, now is the time to plan ahead. Anxiety medications often work best when started before the holiday — please do not wait until the last minute to call.

Please note: We MUST have a current Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) with your pet in order to prescribe medication. If your pet is not current on exams, we recommend scheduling an appointment as soon as possible before the holiday rush.

Give us a call to discuss the best options to help keep your pet calm, comfortable, and safe this Fourth of July.

Snake season is here, and we have already started seeing snake bite cases in pets. Snake bites can become life-threatening very quickly, especially during the warmer months when snakes are more active.

Signs of a snake bite may include:
• Sudden swelling
• Pain or crying out
• Puncture wounds
• Weakness or collapse
• Excessive drooling
• Vomiting or difficulty breathing

If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, seek veterinary care IMMEDIATELY. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen.

We do carry antivenom at our clinics and are prepared to begin emergency treatment as quickly as possible when indicated. Fast treatment can make a major difference in outcome.

Try to keep your pet calm and limit movement while transporting them to the clinic. Call ahead if possible so our team can prepare for your arrival.

We are seeing a HUGE increase in cases of Bob Cat Fever (cytauxzoonosis) at all of our clinic locations right now.

Bob Cat Fever is a serious and often fatal tick-borne disease of cats that is commonly seen in Oklahoma during the warmer months when ticks are most active. It is spread through the bite of an infected tick, most commonly the Lone Star tick.

Symptoms can progress very rapidly and may include:
• High fever
• Lethargy or weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Pale or yellow gums
• Rapid breathing

Unfortunately, many cats become critically ill very quickly, so early recognition and treatment are extremely important.

Both indoor and outdoor cats can be at risk, since ticks can be brought inside on people, dogs, or other animals. The best protection is keeping your cat on year-round tick prevention and checking pets regularly for ticks.

🐾 National Rescue Dog Day 🐾

Today we celebrate the incredible dogs who got a second chance—and the people who gave it to them. Rescue dogs come from all kinds of backgrounds, but they all share one thing in common: the ability to love unconditionally.

Whether they were found as strays, surrendered, or saved from difficult situations, rescue dogs have a way of becoming the most loyal companions. They remind us that sometimes the best dogs are the ones who choose us right back.

At Lake Area Veterinary Clinic, we’re proud to care for so many amazing rescue pets in our community. From their first visit to a lifetime of care, it’s an honor to be part of their story.

This is Peanut, rescued by our assistant Emily. Peanut is a perfect example of how special rescue dogs are and the incredible bonds they form with their people.

If you’ve been thinking about adding a pet to your family, consider adopting—there are so many deserving dogs waiting for their forever homes.

Drop a photo of your rescue pup in the comments—we’d love to celebrate them with you! 🐶❤️

Heartworm disease is a HUGE problem we see this time of year — and unfortunately, we have already diagnosed multiple dogs with heartworms this season.

Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes and can cause severe damage to the heart and lungs. In many cases, pets may not show obvious signs until the disease has already progressed. Treatment can be expensive and hard on your pet, which is why prevention is so important.

The good news is that heartworm disease is preventable!

We offer:
• Heartworm testing
• Monthly and long-acting preventatives
• Heartworm treatment options

at ALL of our clinic locations.

If your dog is not currently on prevention or is overdue for testing, now is the time to schedule an appointment. Protecting your pet is much easier — and safer — than treating heartworm disease later.

Please give us a call if you have questions or would like to schedule your pet’s heartworm test or prevention appointment.
