Goulash is learning that playtime can be fun without getting out of control! This adoptable shelter dog has a lot of prey drive and can get overly intense with the flirt pole. We don’t necessarily want to take that drive away. What we DO want is to give him appropriate outlets to channel it while teaching him to keep his teeth off the handler’s hands and the pole itself. With clear boundaries and an “out” command, Goulash is learning when to engage and when playtime is over. These skills can make a big difference in helping him transition into a home where he can enjoy play safely.

Goulash is still looking for his forever home! Follow his training journey and help spread the word about this one-of-a-kind dog.

Another social progress update with our newest board and train, Reese!

When she came in, she wasn’t extremely shutdown by any means but we could tell she didn’t really know what to think of everything especially other dogs. As we put her in social situations, she would scurry off and avoid any interactions. We then knew she was just a bit under socialized.

A little over a week into her program and she has made her first friend! Reese is opening up to show us her true self, playing with other dogs and humans here at our facility. We really have been focusing on socializing and exposing her to new things everyday to build her confidence in new environments - we love seeing this side of her!

Good puppy socialization isn’t about meeting every dog and person. You need to focus on having the right interactions. Letting dogs greet each other on leash can create frustration or defensive behavior when they feel trapped. And just because a puppy is cute doesn’t mean every stranger needs to stop and give them attention!
Focus on positive dog interactions in appropriate settings and keep greetings with people limited while your puppy learns how to stay calm. Ignoring attention-seeking behavior now can help prevent a dog that expects everyone to engage with them.

Dogs struggling with fear, anxiety, or aggression still need opportunities to enjoy life and be dogs instead of being constantly sheltered from the world. Start focusing more on building their confidence through activities they love and giving them room to learn.

Mowgi isn’t a vicious dog but he had a serious problem with fixating on things which stemmed from deep insecurities. Along with fear and impulse control, this was the recipe for his problematic behaviors. He was really scared of a lot of things including vacuums, trash bags, random noises, guests coming over and miscellaneous things on the walk. His owners have needed to managed him more and more over time and this resulted in isolating him. As they compounded these problems, this inhibited the owners life because of it.

Mowgi is a great example of what a true behavioral modification board and train looks like because we didn’t work obedience. We worked on exposing him everyday to things that freaked him out and did it in a way that we could allow him to make better choices. We made sure when he wanted to react at things, he had alternative ways such as creating space as you see in the clips of him around the vacuum and hose.

This is what Mowgi’s life looks like now and we are very excited to send him home to his owners. 😌
