Wishing a happy belated birthday to our October Client Spotlight, Zara! Zara also graduated from her 1:1 package this morning.

Zara is a 1 year old (as of October 2nd) German Shepherd who lives in Brecksville with her parents, Rachel and Brian. Zara and her family came to us roughly six months ago to address leash manners, house manners, socialization, clean up her basics, and teach her how to work through some of her frustration instead of flopping on the ground. Rachel said her favorite thing about Zara is how snuggly she is and how she makes her people feel so loved.

A big goal of Rachel’s was to have a “go anywhere” dog that could handle social gatherings, traveling, new parks, patios, and more. Zara recently wrapped up a week long trip to Acadia National Park and Rachel reports she did very well and received a handful of compliments on her behavior! Rachel said they continue to work on Zara’s leash manners. When she hits the last bit of her walk she turns on the jets and is ready for the next part of her adventure.

The most important thing Rachel has learned through training is ecollar training and usage. Rachel said this really made things click for Zara and made her realize her job. “We celebrated her 1 year birthday with a trip to Vermont and Maine. She did excellent and it wouldn’t have been possible without all the training she’s had so far!”

The best part of working with Zara for her trainer, Paige, is helping dogs and owners navigate puppyhood, to adolescence. Zara’s parents (and puppy owners in general) have to deal with so many behavior curves but they’ve done a great job tackling everything and going above and beyond for Zara.

November is right around the corner, and if you have any travel plans coming up, now is a great time to get your dog’s boarding dates on the calendar. We still have plenty of availability November 1st - 14th, before the Thanksgiving rush begins, along with six spots remaining for Thanksgiving week.

If your dog has stayed with us before, we’d love to have them back! And if you’ve been thinking about trying boarding with us, this is also a great time to get your pup in before the holiday season gets busy. A trial boarding stay is required for new clients. Annie || 4 Week B&T
Annie’s turning point occurred when we taught her how to pause and think through clear direction, engagement, and play. The goal is never to withhold her favorite toys and high value treats, but to teach her that she cannot demand bark, steal, or guard items. This is often a two way street between teaching appropriate boundaries between dog and handler to avoid any unnecessary conflict.

Annie is now able to settle in the home (when asked and on her own), is more enjoyable on walks, and has stopped stealing items and making a game of it. In addition, she has been joining us for daycare and is continuing to build on her socialization skills, which is teaching her not to pick on the other dog and cat she shares a home with.

Moose || 4 Week B&T
Moose’s turning point came when we were able to slow him down and teach him to settle. Prior to training Moose was constantly pacing, whining, and just looking for something to do. He wanted direction that was not being provided. Once we were able to teach him how to relax and let his handler lead, all his behavior quickly fell into place.

Now Moose is able to go on walks with his housemates with no reactivity, isn’t scaling the 6ft privacy fence to chase prey, is recalling when called, and has better manners around meal times and when receiving (or not receiving) affection. Moose’s family has done a great job and setting the entire household up for success with consistent expectations for all the dogs.

Apollo || 5 Week B&T
Apollo’s turning point came when we put an emphasis on relationship building and trust rather than obedience. The obedience component came later, but with a dog like Apollo who gets so stuck in his flight patterns, we needed to give his brain time to decompress, trust, and get out of survival mode.

Apollo is now able to go on walks through his busy Ohio City neighborhood, hold place while his dad cooks dinner, recall successfully in the yard, and work through scary situations where his confidence is tested. Prior to training Apollo was una

Pack Walks have a few changes coming in October!

Pack walks are moving to 10 AM at Loew Park since cooler temperatures are here to stay. Please continue to sign up in the event we need to change location or time due to inclement weather. Walks are $10 and open to anyone, not just clients. We will no longer be offering an invoice option, so please come prepared to pay with cash or Venmo. These walks are a great way to work on your dog’s socialization, reactivity, and train with like-minded people.

Daycare will be Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with drop off from 7-9 AM and pick up any time before 6:30 PM.

Daycare is $50 for the day, OR you can purchase one of our new 5, 10, or 20 day packages. The larger the package the larger the discount. To purchase a package, please reach out to [email protected]. More details can be found on our website.

We’re continuing daycare training themes. Mondays we will focus on recall, Wednesdays will focus on place and stay, and Fridays will work on leash manners.

This month’s pack hike will meet at the Boston Mills Visitor’s Center to hike Blue Hen Falls in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We will be hiking roughly 2.5 miles and 500 feet of elevation gain. This is an ON LEASH event that takes place outdoors, so please dress accordingly. Pack hikes are $10 and open to anyone. For more information on the event or trail, please check our website.

Meet our September Client Spotlight, Tessa!

Tessa is a 3 year old Mini Aussie that lives in Cleveland Heights with her parents, Sara and Andy, and her dog brother, Theo. Tessa came to us this spring to address her low confidence, human reactivity, and to build an overall better relationship with her people. Sara said her favorite thing about Tessa is her resilience. Even after a stressful event, Tessa is able to bounce back and has an eagerness to learn and adjust her behavior.

Sara’s main goal for Tessa was to build her confidence around people and dogs, with the bonus of being able to trust her off leash and give her more freedom and comfort in new spaces. Tessa did a great job over the course of her 1:1 sessions calmly passing dogs and strangers with lots of engagement with her handler. Sara said they continue to build on Tessa’s manners and comfortability with having guests in the home. Instead of letting Tessa patrol and manage guests, Sara’s job is to tell Tessa that isn’t her job and direct her to an alternative behavior.

Sara said the most valuable thing she learned through training is that her emotional state is vital, as that energy can travel down the leash to Tessa. If Sara is cool, calm, and collected, she is more capable of guiding Tessa through situations she doesn’t love.

“Training really can help you build a loving relationship with your dog. The more Tessa sees me not as an ‘alpha’ or some kind of controlling figure, but as a gentle leader and protector, the more confidence I see in her. With that confidence, trust and loyalty grows exponentially.”

Meet our July Board and Train Crew!

Tofu
Tofu’s turning point came when he developed the confidence to stay engaged with his handler, which led to better choices in new environments. Prior to training he was constantly scanning for the next big threat.

Tofu is now able to pass by dogs on walks, be more neutral in busy spaces, is more engaged in play, less barky in the apartment, and overall more confident.

Nova
Nova’s turning point came when she learned she could act more on flight and move away from triggers or things she was unsure of. Using movement in these situations allowed her to redirect her energy elsewhere and in a more productive fashion.

Today Nova is able to attend pack walks, go on walks around the neighborhood and pass dogs, people, and kids on bikes, and has even gone to an Old Brooklyn Farmers Market

Tina
Tina’s turning point came when we were able to open up a line of communication with her. Prior to training there was a lot of hoping for the right behavior with no way to communicate expectations. Once we taught leash and ecollar pressure, things started to fall into place.

Tina is now able to recall off dogs, socialize with dogs of a similar play style, enjoy walks around the neighborhood, and settle in the home.

Chub
Chub’s turning point came when we were able to give more structure. Chub is a dog who thrives with routine and structure, so once we were able to give him a clear idea of what was needed, he quickly caught on.

Chub is now able to go on walks with his dog siblings, has great recall in the yard, and can hold place when guests come over or when training is being done with his brother, C**t.

Henri
Henri’s turning point came when we were able to build trust and consistency with his handler. By putting trust in his handler Henri was able to take more of a backseat approach in new environments and learn to remain calm and focused on his handler.

Henri is now able to settle within the home, is more confident on walks, less reaction in general, more responsive to commands, and can be crated overnight and when home alone without pa
