Cooler weather doesn’t mean your dog’s grooming should take a season off.
As the seasons change, many dogs shed their undercoat. Loose fur can build up, and damp weather can make tangles harder to manage. Even if you’re keeping your dog’s hair longer for winter, that coat still needs regular care.
How often should your dog visit the groomer?
• Poodles and many Doodles: usually every 4–6 weeks, with regular brushing and combing at home.
• Shih Tzus, Yorkies, and Maltese: usually every 4–6 weeks. Longer styles may need baths between haircuts.
• Goldens, Huskies, and German Shepherds: a professional bath and undercoat removal around every 6–8 weeks can help, with adjustments during heavy shedding.
• Short-haired dogs: baths often every 6–12 weeks, depending on their skin, activity, and how dirty they get.
These are starting points. Your dog’s coat condition matters more than the calendar. If you’re noticing tangles, packed fur, or extra shedding, it may be time to come in sooner. Persistent itching or irritated skin needs a vet’s attention.
