We had the honor & privilege of caring for Leon a few times while his handler was out of town!

Rest in Peace Leon! Job well done!🐾❤️🙏

🐾 Honoring Retired K9 Leon 🐾

On September 5, 2026, our agency said goodbye to Retired K9 Leon, who was laid to rest peacefully. Leon faithfully served Manitowoc County alongside his handler, Deputy Chris Hemauer, for seven dedicated years—from September 2016 through October 2023.

Leon retired at 10.5 years old, enjoying three well‑earned years of retirement at home surrounded by comfort, family, and the people who loved him most.

During his career, Leon distinguished himself as an exceptional working dog and partner. His accomplishments reflect the heart, drive, and loyalty he carried into every track, search, and deployment. Some of his awards include;

- Top Dog Award - Karl Zeitler Memorial Hunt K9 Competition 2022
- WLECHA Meritorious Track Award — 2023
Awarded for locating an elderly gentleman who had wandered from his campsite at Point Beach State Park.

Retired and current K9 handlers gathered at Leon’s home to give him the honor every working dog deserves—his final ride. Leon was escorted to Memorial Drive Veterinary Clinic, where law enforcement officers stood by to pay their respects as he completed his last journey.

K9 Leon served with courage. He retired with dignity. And he leaves behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.

Thank you, Leon, for your service to Manitowoc County.
Thank you, Deputy Chris Hemauer, for your partnership, dedication, and care throughout Leon’s career and retirement.

Rest easy, Leon. We have the watch from here. 🖤🐾
