This week, I had a training consultation with Macie, an 8-year-old dog struggling with anxiety and understanding her role in a multi-dog household. By applying some leadership and giving her a simple job to do, we achieved immediate results in reducing her obsessive barking and nipping at guests. I also provided her parents with practical advice and tips for making small changes that can have a significant impact on behavior modification. I look forward to our training sessions with Macie and her family.

When outside is sizzling like a steak on the grill, it's crucial to check the pavement before taking your pup for a stroll. In cooler weather, I always recommend distancing your dog from the grass where p*e-mail distractions are high, yet on super-hot days, the grass is the coolest spot to be. 🥩♨️🥵
That being said, don't let your dog think that means they are the boss of the walk and you're just along for the ride. Keep them on a short leash, stay in training mode, and make sure they're walking by your side until you release with "Break" or "Free" to a designated p*e or sniff spot.
This will help reinforce your maintained leadership, boost your pup's self-control, and add much-needed structure to your toasty walks on these hot days! P.S. Don't forgot some water for both you and Rover! 💦😎

Last week, Millie successfully completed her training program with Proper Pets, and although this young pup maintained her over-the-top enthusiasm for life, she was able to compose herself and showcase her new skills. Well done, Millie! I am equally impressed by her owner's dedication to training her high-energy dog. The entire family demonstrated exceptional commitment to following the training plan, and the results were evident. Millie is well on her way to becoming a well-rounded household companion.

Is your dog easily distracted in outdoor settings? Does he pull excessively on the leash or have zero engagement once outside? A practical but fun training approach that mimics playtime involves multiple repetitions of on-leash recalls, giving high-value rewards, and keeping the training session positive and enjoyable for the dog.
This was Brody's first session training outside. It was evening time when distractions were high, but after approximately 10 minutes of this 'play', he was much more engaged and responding to cues outside.
A small, sped up clip to demonstrate the multitudes of recalls with short shade breaks in between. Allowing Brody to briefly observe and say Hello to passing dogs and neighbors while remaining focused on the session.
Try this training exercise with your dog before attempting a walk! Or call me for help!

I find that explaining the justification for my rule of only giving the cue once is the hardest training criteria for dog owners to fully understand, but it makes a huge impact on your training. Borrowed this description from another trainer. 😀
