Picture this: you're at a party, minding your business, when a friend grabs your hand and marches you straight up to a total stranger. There is no small talk lead-up. No "hey, do you want to meet this person." Just, bam, awkward face to face social interaction.

Here is the worst part, your friend is still holding your hand through the interaction. You can't step back. You can't create a little space. You're just... standing there, fumbling through the conversation hoping it goes well.

Would you survive it? Probably. Would you enjoy it? Debatable.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior strongly supports early, appropriate socialization during the puppy’s critical developmental period, including BEFORE the full vaccination series is complete, when appropriate precautions are taken.

So what are the things we consider when socializing our puppies before vaccinations are complete?

🐶 Health & hygiene: Clear vaccination requirements, healthy puppies, and good cleaning and disease-prevention practices.

👀 Supervision: Socialization interactions should be actively monitored.

❤️Positive experiences: Puppies should be able to explore and interact without being frightened, overwhelmed, or pressured.

🧠An understanding of body language: Handlers should recognize when a puppy is excited, overwhelmed, uncomfortable, or needs a break.

🌎 Exposure beyond puppy play: Socialization is more than just meeting new dogs and people. Socialization can include new experiences, sounds, smells, and exposure to everyday life.
