AIR QUALITY- HAZARDOUS! STAY INDOORS! QUICK BATHROOM TRIPS ONLY!

With the Canadian & Minnesota wildfires currently affecting air quality across our region, it is important to remember that smoke can impact the health of pets and other animals as well as people. Animals with heart or respiratory conditions are especially vulnerable and should be monitored closely during periods of poor air quality.

Symptoms to watch out for:
- Coughing or gagging
- Difficulty breathing, including open mouth breathing and increased noise when breathing
- Eye irritation and excessive watering
- Inflammation of throat or mouth
- Nasal discharge
- Asthma-like symptoms
- Increased breathing rate
- Fatigue or weakness
- Disorientation or stumbling
- Reduced appetite and/or thirst

Some helpful tips to protect your pets:
- Keep your pets inside as much as possible, and keep your windows shut.
- Let your pets outside only for brief bathroom breaks if air quality alerts are in effect.
- Avoid any intense outdoor exercise during periods of poor air quality. Exercise pets when dust and smoke has settled.

Cyclospora Outbreak in Humans

You likely have heard about the outbreak of Cyclospora cases among humans in our area and Michigan. We have received a few calls from concerned pet owners, so we want to clear up the confusion and give you some peace of mind!

Here is what you need to know about your pets and Cyclospora:

❌ Pets do not get sick from it
❌ Pets cannot give it to you

How it actually spreads: Human outbreaks are almost always linked to eating fresh produce (like berries, cilantro, or lettuce) or drinking water contaminated with human waste.

What you should do: Keep practicing normal food safety! Wash your fresh produce thoroughly before eating, remove outer leaves when possible, and always wash your hands after handling raw food or cleaning up after your pets.

If your human family members get sick, please consult your human physician! But as for your pets—they are completely in the clear.
