But we've upgraded. 🎉

Our new 14 × 17-inch digital plate gives us substantially more imaging area and opens up new possibilities for our canine patients.

That means we can now perform many large-dog radiographic studies right at home.

🌈 Twice now, after helping a beloved pet cross the rainbow bridge, a rainbow has appeared. Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe its comfort. But in those moments it felt like a gentle reminder that love never really leaves us. It's an honor to help family say Goodbye with compassion. ❤️

This is not NWS (it hasn’t reached California yet). There are now 11 confirmed cases in Texas and New Mexico in cattle, dogs, and sheep. My biggest concern will be outside dogs like this one that go unnoticed. This dog was injured for a couple of days which gave the flies enough time to lay eggs and they hatched into larva. This is exactly what every animal owner should be monitoring for. If your livestock or outside animals have any sort of open wound, then they could be subject to New World screwworm. The FDA has approved certain products under emergency authorization for NWS. Please contact your veterinarian if you see any open wound or maggots on your animals.

I am currently working out of town until Tuesday, June 16th. But I wanted to share a case I saw today.

This is a cautionary tale of two separate dogs with the same diagnosis.

I saw two sick dogs today, from the same family. A couple of days ago the owner saw them eating on a carcass. One of the dogs was coughing blood and had a fever.

After a thorough physical exam, piecing together more information from the history, combined with the diagnostics, we came to a diagnosis.

Rodenticide poisoning (rat bait)

At some point a rodent ingested rat bait ☠️. A cat then ate that rodent ☠️. And then the dogs feasted on the cat carcass.

Each dog had one entire lung field full of blood (pneumonia).

The caution applies to small animals as well. He is already feeling better 12 hours later after starting meds.
