UPDATE: They gave him antibiotics?? He passed away late last night. 😭
I’m at the vet with one of our cats (Miles) that is very sick. He’s throwing up and is stumbling to walk. I’m very concerned that somehow he may have gotten into something that has either sickened him or even poisoned him. Please keep Miles in your thoughts. 🐈‍⬛💔

UPDATE: We lost this sweet boy last night. We started treating him immediately upon the signs of FIP but he went down faster than any we’ve ever had. I held him in my arms until his last breath. He was very calm except for an occasional meow. Once again our hearts have been broken. My genuine hope is when I pass that I’ll see them all again. 💔. This is Reed. Reed and his mom are rescues we took in a few weeks ago. Reed has FIP. FIP is fatal and the medicine for it is expensive. As always, we will do whatever we need to do to help them. We already have one we’re treating but we’ll do our best to save them both. We would appreciate it if we can get some support from our followers. 💔

Just a basic one that will last a few weeks. Cover a cardboard box with a plastic trash bag so the cardboard doesn’t get wet.

❄️❄️REMINDER:
How to build a quick TEMPORARY EMERGENCY OUTDOOR SHELTER
1) Take a cardboard box and tape all the seams shut with duct tape. Cardboard is a good temporary insulation. Maybe you can fit a box inside the box?

2) Wrap the box completely with a tarp or trash bags, making as few seams as possible. Secure plastic onto box with duct tape, liberally and tightly wrapping the tape around the sides of the box and sealing all seams. This will make the shelter waterproof.

3) Cut a doorway in one of the shorter sides of the box approximately 6" x 6", leaving the bottom of the doorway a few inches above the bottom of the box to prevent flooding. Use duct tape to secure the loose plastic around the opening you just made. If possible, doorway should face in the opposite direction of the wind, rain and snow providing protection from the elements.

(4) A. Place straw inside the box, filling it up to the bottom of the doorway in front and a little higher towards the back. The cats will gain added warmth by burrowing into the straw.
(4) B. Place your cardboard shelter beneath something that will shield it, like a porch or tree. Raise it off the ground a few inches by placing it on a pallet, bricks or something similar.
(4) C. Weigh the shelter down with a heavy rock or a few bricks, but nothing heavy enough to crush the roof.

⭐ Once the cold weather crisis has passed, replace the temporary emergency shelter with a more permanent one.

Don’t forget your outdoor ferals during the cold. Plus if you’re putting food out for them to put it where snow/ice won’t cover it up. And if you make them a house to put in straw instead of hay or cloth like towels or linens.

After years of cat rescuing I’ve come to the conclusion that there is only one way to stop or virtually stop the euthanasias, death, starvation and extreme sickness of cats and kittens in our country. Not rescues, fosters or even adoption. CAT SANCTUARIES ❤️ In this country there are currently sanctuaries that have taken in hundreds upon hundreds of cats and kittens over the years. For starters all cats will be accepted there to receive veterinary care as needed and food and shelter are available to all. Obviously there will be certain guidelines that would have to be followed. All cats would have to be spayed/neutered. I envision a welcome center where visitors can enter the sanctuary. Walkways and benches throughout so visitors can mingle with the cats. Adoptions would be permitted when someone applies and passes. Inside the Welcome Center would be a cafe style are where drinks and snacks could be purchased as well as a shop to purchase t-shirts and other cat related gifts. There would be certain times of the month when speakers would speak on cat and cat related issues. It would involve a few acres of land that would have to be fenced in appropriately. It would be a place just to help cats. People would even be able to surrender their pets to keep them from being dumped around the city only to continue unlimited breeding. Can it be done? Should it be done? What are the thoughts of cat lovers?
Tell us what you think. I don’t see it ending any other way. ❤️💔🐈‍⬛🐈

And this is the life and death struggles that rescuers see and feel as well. That’s why we have too many cats and kittens for one couple and no friends. Just so happens our newest rescue is an orange girl named Pumpkin. Named that because we got her around Halloween.

Every Wednesday at 4 p.m., I help end the lives of animals no one else wants. That’s the part of my job most people don’t see.
But today… today there was an orange cat. And a child’s note taped to his box.

I’m Dr. Grace Miller, a veterinarian at a small, overcrowded county shelter—the kind of place most people drive past unless they’re dropping off something worn out: an old couch, an old habit… an old pet. Around here, love has a waiting room, and budget cuts have a fast lane.

Wednesdays are what we call “making space.” We say “ending suffering.” Words we use to sleep at night after checking a box next to a name that used to purr or wag its tail.

Pumpkin came in Tuesday. A beat-up cardboard box, left outside after hours. When I opened it, my breath caught in the cold. He was curled into the corner—skinny, sick, barely breathing. His cloudy eyes blinked at me like he was apologizing for existing 💔.

Inside the box was a piece of notebook paper in a child’s handwriting:
“His name is Pumpkin. Please love him. Mom can’t keep him anymore.”
The word Mom was written extra dark, like the child pressed with all their might.

We scanned for a chip. Nothing. His chart filled up fast: bad teeth, heart murmur, senior, low adoption chance. By morning, Pumpkin was on the 4 p.m. list.

“You know how it is,” my supervisor said. “Eighteen from a hoarding case. No luxury for long shots.”

But I couldn’t stop thinking about him. Couldn’t stop seeing his eyes, hearing that rusty little meow whenever I passed his kennel. Hopeful. Like he still believed someone was coming.

At 3:55, Pumpkin was on the table. Wrapped in a towel. Watching me as I drew up the syringe.
And then, with one shaky paw, he touched my wrist.
That’s all it took.

In that moment, I remembered my son, Ethan — and his stuffed orange cat he held through chemo. I remembered why I became a vet. Not to clear cages. To save lives.

So I put the syringe down.
“I’m taking him,” I said. “Foster, hospice… whatever. He’s not a number today.”

That night, Pumpkin slept on my couch, curled on a blanket that still smells like the detergent I used when Ethan was alive. When he dreams, his paws twitch like he’s running somewhere better 🧡🐾.

I can’t save them all. I know that. And that’s the part that breaks me.

But tonight, one old soul is safe. Warm. Loved.
And maybe, just maybe, he saved me too.

Because sometimes the life you rescue… ends up rescuing you.

I don’t post on here as much as I used to. I guess I’ve gotten a little bored with it. But there is something very important and critical going on in our family right now that I want people to know about. Don’t worry I’m not asking for anything. I just want to tell you about a brave little girl and her struggles that are life threatening. My niece, my younger sisters daughter adopted two children from China a few years ago and she purposely adopted two girls with serious health problems. She knew these babies didn’t stand a chance in China so she literally saved these children’s lives. Joanna had surgery yesterday 12/23 to replace a heart valve. She’s had numerous surgeries already and this one was the most serious so far. She’s totally deaf and knows sign language. She’s very smart and has the character that keeps you laughing. She asked that everyone pray for the doctors doing the surgery. She said pray they got A’s in school. That’s just her personality.
