Pet owners- this is long but important !!

We recently had someone reach out to us letting us know that he had gotten one of our dogs from a rescue. We were in complete shock as we do EVERYTHING we can to ensure that owners know that we will take our dogs back under any circumstances. We remain on the microchip, it is in our contract that they come back to us, we try and make contact at least yearly to check on the dogs. This was our worst nightmare that one of them had been in a rescue/shelter. Luckily everything turned out wonderful for this pup.
****That said…. I want to ask other breeders if they have ever had this happen and if they have any suggestions for preventing it in the future.
****I want to ask rescues/shelters what the procedure is if they find a dog or have one turned in on contacting those on the microchip.
****Last I WANT ALL PET OWNERS to think about what they would do with their pets if god forbid something happened to them. Don’t assume your family knows- make sure.
In this instance the owner got sick and her family took the dog to the rescue. There was a copy of our contract in the file of vet info with her but I believe there was so much stress in the situation they did not look. The rescue stated that because the dog was “owner surrender” they did not check the microchip. This girl ended up with the best possible family but none of that had to happen. You make sure people know who gets your children and your money etc. It is just as important they know what to do with your pets- it could save their life.
If you buy a dog from a breeder the breeder should have a clause that they take the dog back no matter how long or you SHOULD NOT buy from that breeder.
