Recently, a kind Good Samaritan brought in an injured snake that was found in rough condition and clearly in need of help.

On arrival, our team found severe dehydration, malnourishment, mites, stomatitis (a painful mouth infection), and multiple scars along the body from past trauma. Despite everything this little one has been through, there is still fight left in him, and we’re doing everything we can to help, thanks to our community and their donations to Blake Veterinary Clinic's Good Samaritan Fund.

Exotic pets are often misunderstood, but they deserve comfort, medical care, and compassion just like any dog or cat that walks through our doors. Cases like this are a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can completely change an animal’s future.

We’re incredibly thankful to the Good Samaritan who stopped, cared, and took action instead of looking away. Because of that decision, this patient now has a chance to heal and found a new home right away.

Our veterinary team has already started supportive care, treatment for the mites and infection, hydration therapy, nutritional support, and pain management. Recovery will take time, but this little snake is finally safe.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support veterinary medicine, rescue efforts, and the belief that every life matters. ♥

BVC Pet Audacity Files: Mermaid Man

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Title: “Science Was Performed. On Me.”

Mermaid Man here.
Today I participated in a barium study, which (for those less informed) is when you drink a special liquid that shows up on X-rays so the staff can watch it travel through your digestive system. Very educational. Very important.

Also very… messy.

Apparently, this helps them check how things move inside—looking for blockages, delays, or anything suspicious. What they did not mention is that you may temporarily become a walking, slightly sticky science experiment.

The staff were fantastic. They were patient, gentle, and highly invested in both the results and my dignity (which, to be clear, suffered briefly but survived).

Five stars. I learned a lot today. Mostly that medicine is amazing… and I should never trust white liquids again.

Why is this pup awake with a breathing tube still in?

Flat-faced breeds like the French Bulldog, Pug, and English Bulldog can have narrower airways, which makes waking up from anesthesia a little trickier.

Our surgical team is specially trained in caring for brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, so we tailor each step, including recovery, to what’s safest for them.

For some of these pets, it’s actually safer to keep the breathing tube in a bit longer until they’re more awake and able to breathe well on their own.

💙 This helps us make sure they’re getting plenty of air
💙 It lowers the risk of breathing problems right after surgery
💙 And it keeps recovery as smooth and safe as possible

It might look a little surprising, but it’s all part of giving these special pups the extra care they need!
