🍄🐾 Fall Mushroom Safety for Pets

As this Pennsylvania rainy season continues so does the concern for wild mushrooms. While some mushrooms are harmless, others can be extremely toxic to dogs and cats, and even a small amount can cause serious illness. Toxic mushrooms are difficult to identify so it's safest to prevent pets from ingesting sting and eating any wild mushrooms. Pennsylvania's rainy weather has promoted mushrooms growth increasing the risk of exposure.

Watch for signs of mushroom toxicity:
-Vomiting
-Diarrhea
-Excessive Drooling
-Weakness or lethargy
-Tremors or Drooling

If you suspect your pet has eaten a mushroom, contact your vet or local emergency center immediately. Early treatment can make a significant difference in treatment outcome.

🍂Prevention Tip: Check your yard regularly for mushrooms and keeps pets on a leash during walks and hikes to prevent accidental ingestion.

WE’RE OFFICIALLY OPEN TOMORROW!!!!

After a very long road, Steamtown Veterinary Center will officially open our doors tomorrow!!!

Beginning tomorrow, 08/22/2026, we’ll be here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For anyone who is new to our page, Steamtown Veterinary Center is a privately owned veterinary hospital created to provide Northeastern Pennsylvania with emergency veterinary care when your pet is sick, injured, or needs immediate care.

We are not here to replace your regular veterinarian. We’re here to work alongside the amazing general practices in our community by providing emergency and urgent care, hospitalization, surgery, diagnostics, and continued care when your regular veterinarian may not be available.

Our hospital is equipped for:
• Emergency and urgent veterinary care
• 24 hour hospitalization and monitoring
• Emergency and urgent surgery
• Soft tissue surgery
• Dentistry, dental radiographs, and oral surgery
• Digital X-rays
• Ultrasound
• In house laboratory testing
• Oxygen support and critical care
• And more

For now, we will primarily be seeing dogs and cats. We may have veterinarians working who have a special interest or experience in exotic animal medicine. When those doctors are scheduled, we’ll let everyone know that exotic appointments or emergencies may be available during those specific shifts.

At this time, we do not have any exotic focused shifts scheduled, so for now, please consider us a dogs and cats only hospital unless we announce otherwise.

Starting tomorrow, if your pet needs us, we’re here, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Exciting news!

Join us in welcoming Dr. Tiffany Chen DVM DACVO to the Ophthalmology Department at EPVMC! 🎉

Tiffany Chen is a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist with a passion for providing advanced eye care. She grew up near Los Angeles, CA and attended the University of Southern California, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. She then pursued her veterinary degree at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Veterinary Medicine.

Following veterinary school, Dr. Chen completed a small animal rotating internship at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital and a specialty internship at Long Island Veterinary Specialists. She returned to the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital to complete a residency in veterinary ophthalmology, where she received advanced training in the medical and surgical management of complex ocular diseases.
