Her story:
A doggie member of our community Kiera fell ill. She needs the help of local animal lovers with an emergency medical case. Kiera's mom acted qu**ky to seek vet care. After 2 visits in 1 week, one including emergency and then a 3rd emergency visit has been financially hard.
Vet visit # 1
Earlier this week this poor baby was throwing up non stop and then was dehydrated. She was seen at the vet, given meds to stop the vomitting and sent home. No cause to why. Xrays were suggested as a possible next step to be done if meds did not create improvement.
Day 1
- Upon returning home over the next 24 hours she was peeing a lot more (because of the fluids) good. No interest in food. Presumed Drinking.
Day 2
Misty watching other signs. She noticed a small amounts of brown / bloody discharge. She seeked advice from us.
- She decided to eat lunch meat and peices off of a cold cut sandwich. Drinking normal.
Day 3
Took a negative turn
She was more lethargic. When her owners came home, they noticed something new wrong. Her Stomach area swollen with pressure. When Kiera when to a standing position, a large amount of blood and discharge came out of her uterus and onto the floor. This was scary to witness. Cheatlake was full. AVETS was the closest open emergency option for Diagnosis.

This happened so fast. It can happen to dogs and cats. AT Any age. At any time if unspayed. She is young. Her 1st heat started January 27th and lasted about 16 days ending aproximately FEB 12th. After heat, it is normal for the organs on the inside and outside to appear swollen for 4 to 8 weeks upon the cyles end. Her initial symtoms of vomitting and dehydration could have been the start of various things. With her just finishing her heat cycle not even 14 days ago, her being swollen still wasnt a thought of an issue. Then with a sudden change of new symtoms of brownish discharge, a lot of sleeping with lethargy and no eating PYOMETRA became a concern of question. Then the bloody event that happened within a few hours of the discharge, it was clear that she indeed had PYOMETRA.
Imagine hearing an untouchable price. Avets only option if surgery could not be afforded was euthanasia or seek treatment elsewhere at a cheaper cost. Time wasnt really on their side.
With the guidance of a few other animal lovers and ourselves, they were able to understand her medical issue and get her seen at a more affordable vet for the same service.
She was able to reach the veterinarian at Donovans to conifrm availability for surgery 1st thing this morning.

EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION:
Pyometra is a serious, life-threatening, and common infection of the uterus in unspayed female dogs and cats, usually occurring 4-8 weeks after a heat cycle, particularly in middle-aged to older pets. It requires immediate emergency veterinary care, with surgical removal of the uterus and ovaries (spay) being the primary treatment.
