Disclaimer: ALWAYS consult your vet first! While these images are somewhat graphic, they are not uncommon to us who hunt with dogs or those who have backyard dogs. Snakebites can be deadly so you should ALWAYS consult your vet. This is a testimony to what happened AFTER vet consultation, and as most of us know, is an atypical result after a rattlesnake bite, which is lethal alot of times.
We have dogs that hunt and we have experience with our beagle Candi who received a rattler bite. We do NOT recommend home treatment without VET attention FIRST. But, we do believe in these products as it helped to save our dog, Candi, and our dog Summer who was viciously attacked by another dog - and now our customer friend Emma had great results. These products are a regular part of our vet bag we carry.
These pictures are of our customer friend, Emma and her 90+ pound dog. He unfortunately was bit by a rattlesnake. Emma took him to an urgent care clinic who initially cleaned the wound, but wanted to amputate the leg. Emma loves her dog and didn't want that and a customer referred her to us. We evaluated the bite and could see the entry point. It's far away from the heart and appears only one fang penetrated at an angle (likely the dog surprised the rattler). The dog was not in shock or feverish and these initial pics are 3 days after the bite where the venom is melting the skin/tissue/sinew.
We showed Emma how to treat this using Pink Lady to flood the open wound - it contains a natural antiseptic.
Because snake bites carry a high degree of infection, we doubled down using Fin Sulfa SMZ/TMP which is a very strong compound medication.
Emma kept in touch by text and phone and 2 visits to the store. We also provided her with our country vet phone number who is used to dealing with snakebites here in Oklahoma. We gave Emma a list of 'watch for this' items as snakebites can turn in an instant.
As you can see, the Pink Lady and medication were performing wonderfully.
Once the underlying tissue closed back up and the dog was putting weight down, we moved to treating with Vetericyn Hydrogel. This forms a 'spiderman like web' over the wound. This will continue until the top layers are healed and the fur regrows.
We want to commend Emma on her diligence in treating this and her attention to taking her dog to the vet first, and in her commitment to doing what is best for her dog. Emma and her dog are now on a secure pathway to healing after many weeks and we are excited for them both.
Our heart at Okie Dog is for dogs - and their owners. The best result is healing, the bond between Emma and her dog, and the great big hug Emma gave us and the big lick in the face her dog gave us as he felt so much better. He's now trying to run around the yard!
