🚨🐱 IMPORTANT CAT INTAKE UPDATE 🐱🚨

Our cat intake is CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE due to a confirmed positive case of ringworm within our shelter.

This decision is being made at the direction of one of our veterinarians to protect the health and safety of the animals in our care and prevent further exposure.

🛑 THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WE DO NOT ALLOW INCOMING ANIMALS THROUGH OUR FRONT DOOR.

Our front-door policy isn't about making things difficult or turning animals away. It is a disease-prevention measure.

Any animal entering a shelter could potentially be carrying a contagious illness — even if they look completely healthy. Ringworm, respiratory infections, parasites, and other illnesses can spread quickly when animals are brought into close contact with the shelter population.

That's why incoming animals must go through our designated intake area. This allows our team to properly assess them and, when necessary, immediately separate or isolate them from our healthy and adoptable animals.

Keeping intake separate from the adoption population helps protect the animals who are already here.

And unfortunately, we're seeing firsthand right now why that separation is so important.

🐱❤️ OUR UPCOMING CAT ADOPTION EVENT IS STILL ON!

❗️️The positive case is isolated to our intake/medical area and does NOT affect our upcoming cat adoption event over the next few weeks.❗️

To prevent further exposure, we are limiting access and contact within the isolation area and following all recommendations from our veterinarian.

🚫 Please do NOT bring cats or kittens to the shelter until we announce that cat intake has reopened. If you find an animal that needs help, please contact us first so we can provide guidance.

We know there are animals in our community who need help, and we don't take a temporary intake closure lightly. But protecting the animals already in our care has to come first.

Thank you for understanding why our intake procedures — including keeping incoming animals out of the front lobby — are so important.

These policies are in place for one reason: DISEASE PREVENTION.

✈️❤️ 50 DOGS. ONE FREEDOM RIDE. 50 SECOND CHANCES.❤️✈️

Today, 50 dogs from Central Alabama boarded a freedom flight to northern rescue partners.

And while you may see a picture of dogs getting on a plane…

We see lives that just changed forever.🐾

For some of these dogs, the shelter had become their entire world. A kennel. A concrete floor. The same four walls. Day after day.

But today?

They got a plane ticket.✈️🐶
They got a second chance.
They got hope.
And most importantly… they got a way out. ❤️

What you DON'T see in the pictures is everything it takes to make a freedom flight happen.

These transports take MONTHS of preparation.

There are medical appointments, vaccines, testing, health certificates, paperwork, scheduling, transportation, coordinating with rescue partners, preparing kennels, organizing individual dogs, and about a million moving pieces that all have to come together at exactly the right time.

And then comes transport day.

It's chaotic. It's exhausting. It's stressful.

And our shelter staff somehow make it happen. ❤️

🐾 To our incredible shelter team — THANK YOU.

Thank you for staying late.
Thank you for lifting, carrying, cleaning, organizing and coordinating.
Thank you for calming the scared dogs.
Thank you for the last-minute scrambling.
Thank you for caring about every single one of them.

You don't just move animals. You change lives.

🐾 To Petco Love — THANK YOU!❤️✈️

These lifesaving flights give shelter dogs opportunities they may never have had otherwise. We are incredibly grateful for the chance to send our dogs toward brighter futures.

🐾 And to Cox Veterinary Hospital… we cannot thank you enough!❤️

Every time we call and say, “We have a large group that needs health certificates,” your team never turns us away.

You make room.
You help us get it done.
You show up for these animals.

Your entire team ROCKS! 🐾❤️

And then there's YOU.

Our community.

Because here's the part people may not realize:

✨️These freedom rides aren't free.✨️

Getting a dog ready to fly requires medical care, vaccines, preventatives, testing, health certificates, transportation and so much more.

And the cost to prepare these dogs is far beyond what we are allotted per animal.

So when you donate to the shelter, you're not just buying a bag of food.

You're helping put a dog on a plane.

You're helping pay for the health certificate that allows them to travel.

You're helping provide the medical care that makes them transport-ready.

You're helping create freedom.✈️❤️

Without our community, these flights simply wouldn't happen.

So today, when you see see these dogs heading north, remember that there is an entire village behind them.

The shelter staff.
The veterinarians.
The transport teams.
The rescue partners.
The donors.
The volunteers.
And every single person who has ever shared a post, donated $5, donated supplies, or simply said:

“These dogs deserve better.”

Today, 50 dogs got their better. 🐶❤️

50 dogs. 50 second chances. 50 futures that look a little brighter tonight.

Fly free, sweet babies. Your next chapter starts NOW. ✈️🐾❤️

And to everyone who helped make today possible…

THANK YOU. YOU WERE PART OF THIS FREEDOM RIDE. ❤️

It's a role for someone who can help connect the dots between our animals, our volunteers, our community, our rescue partners, and potential adopters.

Because saving lives doesn't stop at the shelter doors. ❤️🐾

🐾❤️ IT’S NATIONAL DOG DAY… AND LANDY HAS ONE WISH. ❤️🐾

Today, we’re celebrating everything we love about dogs — the happy tail wags, the goofy zoomies, the head tilts, the unconditional love, and the way they somehow become a piece of our hearts before we even realize it. 🥹🐶

But while so many dogs are celebrating today surrounded by their families, Landy is spending hers waiting for someone to choose her.💔

Landy doesn’t know how long she’s been waiting. She doesn’t understand why she hasn’t been picked yet. She just knows that every time someone walks by her kennel, there’s a chance that maybe… this could be her person. 🥺❤️

And we want SO badly for that person to walk through our doors.

Because Landy deserves more than a kennel.
She deserves a name spoken with love.
She deserves a soft place to sleep.
She deserves someone to come home to.
She deserves adventures, belly rubs, treats, toys and a family who will never give up on her. 🏡🐾

Landy deserves to know what it feels like to be HOME.

So on National Dog Day, let’s make her wish come true. ❤️

Maybe you’re the family Landy has been waiting for.
Maybe you know someone who is.
Or maybe you can simply SHARE this post so the right person has a chance to find her.

🐶 Let’s turn Landy’s “maybe someday” into “I found my forever family.”🥹❤️

📍 Come meet Landy at the Chilton County Animal Shelter and give this sweet girl the chance she’s been waiting for.

Today is National Dog Day. Let’s make it Landy’s LAST one without a forever home. 🏡❤️🐾

🚨 RABIES HAS BEEN CONFIRMED RIGHT AT OUR COUNTY’S BACK DOOR.🚨

The Alabama Department of Public Health has issued a press release regarding a confirmed case of rabies in a neighboring area, and we want to use this as an important reminder to our community:

💉 PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR PETS ARE VACCINATED.

Rabies is a deadly disease that can affect both animals and people. Once symptoms develop, rabies is almost always fatal—which is why prevention is so incredibly important.

📌 Alabama state law requires ALL dogs, cats, and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies.

🦠 PROTECT YOUR FAMILY FROM RABIES

You can also help prevent human exposure by:

🚫 Never touch or handle wild animals, especially animals that appear sick, injured, unusually friendly, confused, or are behaving strangely.

🐾 Keep your pets away from wildlife and don't allow them to interact with stray or wild animals.

🏠 Secure your home by keeping doors, windows, and other potential entry points protected from wildlife.

❌ Do not attempt to rescue or rehabilitate wildlife yourself. Contact the appropriate wildlife or animal control authorities for assistance.

👀 Teach children not to approach or touch wild animals, even if the animal appears friendly or harmless.

🐕 Keep dogs, cats, and ferrets current on their rabies vaccinations.

⚠️ If you or your pet are bitten, scratched, or otherwise exposed to an animal that may have rabies, seek medical or veterinary guidance immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Rabies is preventable, but once exposure occurs, taking the proper steps quickly is critical.

Please take a moment today to check your pets' vaccination records. If you aren't sure whether your pet's rabies vaccine is current, contact your veterinarian.

If you do not have a primary veterinarian, Chilton County has 3 clinics:

Cox Veterinary Hospital
Healing Paws Veterinary
Blue Bonnett

Give them a call!

A simple vaccine and a little awareness can save a life. ❤️🐾

A fox found late last week on private property in the general vicinity of the Billingsley junction, where U.S. Highway 82 and Autauga County Road 1 intersect, has been confirmed positive for rabies. See our full news release at alabamapublichealth.gov/blog/2026/08/nr-18.html.

🌟🐾STAFF SPOTLIGHT: MEET RILEY!🐾🌟

🚨 EVERY SHELTER NEEDS A RILEY.🚨

Some people walk into a shelter and see kennels, barking dogs, and a long list of things that need to be done.

Riley sees an animal who needs somebody.❤️

Riley is such a breath of fresh air to our team. She has a calm, collected presence that somehow makes even the craziest shelter days feel a little more manageable. And when there’s an animal that needs an extra hand?

Riley is there. 🐾

Whether it’s a nervous pup, a kitten who needs some TLC, or one of those BIG dogs who apparently have decided Riley is their personal assistant… 😂🐕‍🦺

She never lets them bully her out of giving them the absolute best care she can.

And let's be honest…

Some of these big dogs definitely seem to think:

"Riley works for ME." 😂

But Riley doesn't seem to mind.

Because she loves them all. ❤️

And we mean ALL of them.

The dogs. 🐶
The cats. 🐱
The little ones.
The big ones.
The sweet ones.
The spicy ones. 🌶️
The ones who need a little extra patience.

Riley shows up for every single one.

Her calm personality, willingness to help, and genuine love for the animals make her such an important part of our team.

We are incredibly lucky to have her—and so are the animals who get to cross paths with her. ❤️🐾

👇 **NOW IT'S RILEY'S TURN!** 👇

"I started working at the shelter because ever since I was little, I’ve always wanted to take care of animals. I enjoy working at the shelter because I can do just that, care and help animals in need. From cleaning out their kennels, ensuring that they have a clean area to stay, all the way to being able to interact with them and give them something they enjoy and to look forward to every day. That’s my why. I hope to be the reason the animals at the shelter enjoy the time that they spend in here and wait for their forever homes. Working here has made me realize that I am not the only one who cares for animals in such a way, and that there is a community I have that spends so much hard work and time into caring for these animals."

Help us give Riley a big HELLO in the comments! 👋💕

Because behind every wagging tail, purr, adoption, and second chance…there's a person showing up every day to make it possible.

And today, we're celebrating Riley.🐾❤️

✨ EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: MEET COLTON — OUR DOG WHISPERER! ✨

Colton is one of our Animal Care Specialists, but if you ask us, that title doesn’t quite capture what he does.

He has a special gift for helping shy dogs come out of their shells.

The nervous dog hiding in the back of the kennel?

Colton is patient.

The dog who doesn’t trust people?

Colton earns their trust.

The dog who has forgotten how to be confident?

Colton helps them find their confidence again. 🥹❤️

And somehow, he does it all with that big, bubbly personality that seems to make even the most hesitant dogs think…

"Okay… maybe this human isn't so bad."🐶💕

That’s why we’re so incredibly thankful to have Colton on our team. He doesn't just care for the animals—he connects with them.

And sometimes, that connection is the first step toward changing a dog's entire future.

But don't just take our word for it…

👇COLTON WANTS TO INTRODUCE HIMSELF! 👇

"I started working at the animal shelter because I want to become a veterinarian one day. I wanted to get experience working with animals and learn more about taking care of them. My favorite part has been getting to know the dogs and seeing all their different personalities. My favorite dog was Meliodas, and I was sad when he got sent to a rescue, but I’m happy knowing he has a better chance of finding a good home. Before I started working here, I didn’t realize how much work goes into helping animals find homes. I’m really thankful for people like my coworkers who work hard to connect us with rescues that can take dogs and give them another chance. I hope that while I’m here, I can help as many animals as I can and learn things that will help me become a veterinarian in the future."

So when you see Colton around the shelter, tell him hello!👋

Let's give Colton lots of appreciation as sometimes those who dedicate their time caring for these misplaced animals don't get nearly the recognition they deserve👏

And if you've ever watched a scared shelter dog transform into a happy, confident dog, you know just how special people like Colton are. ❤️
