Hello Farm Friends! Some days are harder than others. Just shake your head days.

I had to cut up a tree that had fallen in the woods after the last storm. I decided to leave a couple of dogs in the house when I left to do this. I did it for their safety. These two are the type of dogs that will try to stay close to you, and I didn’t want them around falling limbs or the chainsaw.

So I decided to leave them inside the house. I gave them a couple of new toys to play with while I was gone. This would keep them occupied for a little while.

After a couple hours of cutting, I returned to the house to get a cold drink and let these two dogs out. This is what it looked like when I opened the door and walked in.They must have had a field day. They had torn the two new toys to smithereens. No question that they had fun. Fuzee’s everywhere and the floor rug was wadded up like a hurricane had come through the room during my absence. The look they gave me was priceless when I asked, “What did you do to the new toys?”

They hung their heads down listening to me but secretly they were smiling because they had fun ripping them apart. I grabbed a trash bag and picked up all the fuzees. I couldn’t find one of the squeakers that was inside the toys. I was afraid to pick up Scooter dog, I figured he must have eaten it. I didn’t want him to squeak if I picked him up and have all the dogs chase him around for the squeaker.

In the mess I found a chewed up appliance cord that belonged to something. I checked the vacuum, the tv, etc., and couldn’t find anything missing a plug in cord. Something tells me I will figure out the mystery this weekend.

Remember, if you have the power to make someone happy, do it.

Hello Farm Friends! We were taking one of our daily walks with the dogs. Many went racing ahead, a few followed close by, and there were a few stragglers walking behind us.

I looked up and saw something pop up from the grass ahead of big Cash dog. It looked like a snake. I immediately screamed for big Cash dog to stop and come back to me. I was trying to find a long limb to either disperse it or get it to move along on its merry way. I sure enough didn’t want one of the dogs to get bit by a poisonous snake. Since we were by the lake I thought it might be a water moccasin.

Big Cash just stopped and stood there looking dumbfounded. He looked at me like I had gone plum loco hollering at him. I finally snatched up a stick and raced up to him with my stick raised in disperse mode.

Instead of a snake it was just an old stick that had raised up when a few dogs raced ahead and stepped on it. I was really happy it was not a poisonous snake but only a stick. I picked it up and threw it into the woods.

On the farm way out in the country, you always have to be on your toes. There are lots of things around here that can hurt you if you are not aware of your surroundings.

Ever wonder when “you” had a bad day, if it was the other way around? Maybe the day had a bad “you.”

Hello Farm Friends! Have you met Captain Ahab the duck? He is the Rouen duck with the green head in the picture. He resembles a mallard duck and lives on our farm lake.

The Rouen duck was originally bred from the Mallard duck. They are heavier than a mallard and cannot fly. Nope, not a bit. Why you ask? Because he is too heavy to fly. They can flap their wings and run across the water but can’t get airborne. He is the captain of the farm lake and is surrounded by Muscovy females.

The other ducks in the picture are all Muscovy ducks. They are a separate duck breed native to South America. Muscovy ducks are the only domestic duck breed not derived from the Mallard duck.

Ducks are natural insectivores. They hunt and eat large amounts of insects, including ticks, mosquitoes, slugs, snails, grubs, and even potato bugs. They all enjoy living on the farm lake and are joyful and amusing to sit watch.

Remember, how we spend our days is how we spend our lives.

Hello Farm Friends! A name says it all.
Did you know we have a Doberman? Yup, we do. It’s not a dog but one of our Sulcata Tortoises. We named him “Doberman.” Why in the wide world of animals did we name a tortoise “Doberman” you ask. Well It’s because he always has a look on his face like he is a guard tortoise. That, and it just brings a smile to our face having a tortoise named Doberman. Nothing like telling someone “Doberman” is out of his pen and watching them get ready to scatter. Just the name “Doberman” can cause the hair on the back of your neck to stand up.

Oh, did you know that we also have a “Clydesdale”? I’ll let you guess what animal we named Clydesdale, and it’s not a horse or donkey.

We also have an animal named “Copperhead”. Yup, we do.

It’s just a word, a name. However, a word's impact depends heavily on who says it, the tone used, and how it’s said. As an example, just a whisper of a specific name can trigger an immediate physiological fight-or-flight response.

The look on some people’s faces when I tell them there is a copperhead down by the hay barn and I’m going down to feed it. It’s priceless. It really is.

Remember, don’t rush something you want to last forever.

Hello Farm Friends! Don’t you just love Saturdays? We sure do.

On Saturdays we load go and make our weekly supply runs. First we draw straws to see who gets to go to town with us. This week it was Ms. Treasure dog, Scooter dog, and Ms. Star dog.

We swing by the post office, the hardware store, and our favorite, the feed store. We just love going to the feed store and stocking up for the week. We go to several but our favorite is Garrisons Farm & Home.

This week while I was inside Scooter dog dug the truck manual out of the back of the glovebox and tore it to smithereens. I guess he wanted to study up on how to change the wiper blades and couldn’t find the right page, so he just chewed until he found the right page.

It’s the simple pleasures in life that keep us happy.

Hello Farm Friends! Poor ole Ms. Hope dog.
We were out feeding and at the feed barn loading up. Ms. Hope dog saw an anole lizard walking along the deck of the building. For some unknown reason, she jumped on it and gobbled it up. Yup, right down the hatch it went.

I told her, “Have you lost your marbles? Those aren’t for dogs to eat.” Then I went back to loading feed.

A few minutes later I noticed her just sitting there watching me, which was odd. Then I noticed she had the hiccups. Never before have a seen a dog with the hiccups. That anole lizard must have given her the hiccups. I started laughing at her. Yup, it was funny.

I must have embarrassed her by laughing at her because she jumped up and trotted off. When I checked on her later in the day her hiccups were gone. I believe she went somewhere and vomited to get rid of that lizard. They are not poisonous to dogs, but they carry salmonella, which can cause a dog to get sick.

At feeding time, she ate good so maybe she will be alright and not get sick.

Remember, it will all be worth it in the end.

Hello Farm Friends! Regardless of what you’ve heard, pigs won’t eat just anything. They do the sniff test first. Yup, they sniff it.

The picture shows Ms. Spamela, our resident Mangalista pig, sniffing a pumpkin before eating it. If it passes the sniff test, she will eat it. If not, it will be used for compost in her pen.

A few things we have learned that pigs won’t eat are raw potatoes, onions, garlic, jalapenos, and artichokes. If we bake them first, they will eat a baked potato.

If you notice the coat on Ms. Spamela, it is starting to grow with this cooler weather we have been having. She is known as a "sheep pig.” She is a rare heritage breed of domestic pig known for its thick, curly, wool-like coat that makes it look remarkably like a sheep. The colder it gets, the more her wool will grow so she can survive cold weather. Who knew.

Remember to find joy in the simple things and life will always be fulfilling.

Hello Farm Friends! They say a picture is worth a thousand words. This one is.

Mr. Cedric is enamored by Ms. Charlotte pig. He walks down and sees her every morning. He has been doing this for years.

When he walks up, she will run to the fence and lean close into the fence. He will give her a kiss through the fence. Then they both go their merry way.

Remember, being nice is so easy. So just do it.

Hello Farm Friends! Life’s simple pleasures are the best. They really are.

A popsicle on a hot day. Listening to a whip-poor-will singing its mating call. Watching hummingbirds swarming around a feeder. Sitting around a bonfire on a cold night. And a new dog bed. Yup, a new dog bed.

We recently picked up a kid’s bed at a yard sale. I brought it home and put it on the front porch for the dogs. It didn’t take long before a couple dogs discovered it and hopped right on. Every time I looked there was a different dog enjoying the new dog bed.

Remember, what we do won’t always make sense to some people. And that’s ok. If we can make one animal happy, then we are living in the middle of what we once wished for.

Hello Farm Friends! Let’s look at the odds. A storm is coming up through Alabama from the hurricane in the gulf. Think we will have some trees down on the farm? Think there will be any fence damage? The bookies in Las Vegas could have predicted it because almost every time we have a storm there is a tree down on a fence somewhere on the farm. It’s just a fact of life.

Saturday was no exception. We had several trees blow down in the high winds. Two were up in the woods and did not cause any damage. Only one landed on a fence in a pig pen. We just cut the tree off the fence and will use it for firewood this winter.

On Friday night we draped some tarps over some chicken pens in anticipation of the approaching bad weather. We thought we had them where they would drain the water off the pen. Nope. We had so much rain the tarps filled with water. The weight of the accumulated water caved the roof in and severely damaged two chicken pens. We spent several hours Saturday chasing and catching chickens that were on walkabout. Luckily no animals were injured.

Being ready for mother nature is a myth. We do the best we can and afterward we pick up the pieces and life goes on.
