Tuesday Tip!

This tip brought to you by the AAEP

HOW AND WHY DO HORSES GET ULCERS?

Equine gastric ulcers can affect any horse of any age. Up to 90% of racehorses and 60% of show horses, as well as non-performance horses and even foals are affected by equine gastric ulcers. Gastric ulcers result from the erosion of the stomach lining due to a prolonged exposure to the normal acid present in the stomach.

Unlike ulcers in humans, bacteria do not appear to cause equine gastric ulcers. Instead, this condition is often a man-made disease. Stall confinement alone can lead to the development of ulcers. A horse’s feeding schedule and high-grain diets can also contribute to the development of ulcers.

Stress, both environmental and physical, can increase the likelihood of ulcers, as can hauling, training, and mixing groups of horses. Strenuous exercise can decrease the emptying of the stomach as well as the blood flow, thus further contributing to the problem.

The treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers is directed at removing these predisposing factors, therefore decreasing acid production within the horse’s stomach. Prevention of ulcers is the key in helping your horse, as neutralizing the production of stomach acid is nature’s best antacid.

Please note that the only way to definitively diagnose ulcers is through a gastroscopy. An equine veterinarian should always be consulted in any case of suspected gastric ulcers to determine the best course of action and treatment for the individual horse.

We are looking forward to this!

Building Bonds & Learning the Ropes! 🐴🇺🇸
We’re excited to welcome trainers, Stephanie Biernbaum and Jake Biernbaum from Pear tree Ranch, to Ponies for Patriots & Pint Size Therapy this week to introduce our veterans to natural horsemanship! Our veterans have been spending time at the ranch enjoying companionship and gentle exercise with our minis, hand-walking, grooming, bathing and feeding them.
Now, they’ll learn more about basic groundwork and the “why” behind what we do. These hands-on lessons will help build confidence, deepen their understanding of horse behavior and strengthen the connection they’ve already begun with our horses. Our veterans are also looking forward to learning some roping skills from Jake!

Learn the foundation we use with every horse entrusted to our program.

At Pear Tree Ranch, every horse begins with the same proven foundation. We call it our “Bare Minimum”—a core set of essential groundwork skills that establish trust, communication, and understanding before we ever consider climbing into the saddle.

We simply don’t ride horses that cannot confidently complete these five fundamental exercises. These skills allow us to identify where a horse needs additional support, develop a clearer understanding of pressure and release, and prepare them to respond confidently in a variety of situations once under saddle.

When these foundational skills are established on the ground, we follow a step-by-step riding program that builds clear communication, confidence, and the essential skills every horse needs to become a willing, reliable riding partner.

By developing a strong foundation in both groundwork and riding, horse and rider gain greater safety, confidence, and enjoyment while creating the partnership needed to achieve their individual goals—whether on the trail, in the show pen, or simply enjoying time together.
