β€œBob” was an early imported Gordon Setter from England, arriving in the early 1880s. An inscription on the back of the painting indicates that it was given to August Belmont by Baron de Rothschild.

August Belmont was a noted New York sportsman and banker, representing not only the Rothschilds but also the Habsburg family. His son, August Belmont Jr., was the fourth, and longest-serving, president of the AKC. The town of Belmont and the racetrack Belmont Park are named in their honor.

Six plants still sitting in nursery displays right now have been flagged or restricted in multiple states.

They're not labeled as problems. They're labeled as ornamentals. And most of them have native alternatives that do the same job in your yard without spreading into the landscape around it.

The swaps aren't sacrifices β€” in most cases, the native option gives you something the invasive never did.

🌿 What to skip and what to plant instead:

- Bradford pear β†’ native serviceberry. Same size, same white spring flowers β€” plus edible berries and branches that hold through storms instead of splitting

- Japanese barberry β†’ native ninebark. Barberry is restricted in several Northeast states partly because the dense interior harbors tick populations. Ninebark gives you the same hedge structure without the problem

- Burning bush β†’ Virginia sweetspire or highbush blueberry. You get the same fall red β€” and with blueberry, you get fruit on top of it

- Butterfly bush β†’ native summersweet. Butterfly bush draws adult butterflies but doesn't host any of their larvae. Summersweet does both β€” and the summer fragrance carries across a yard

- Nandina β†’ American beautyberry. Nandina berries can be harmful to birds that gorge on them in winter. Beautyberry produces striking purple clusters that are safe for wildlife

- Norway maple β†’ red maple or sugar maple. Norway's dense canopy shades out native understory plants. The native maples support hundreds of insect species that feed the food chain above them

The label at the garden center tells you what it looks like. Your state's invasive species list tells you what it does 🌱
