🐾 Happy National Veterinary Technician Week! 🐾

At Tennessee Avenue Animal Hospital, we love taking time to shout out our incredible technicians for everything they do.

Your technician places the catheter, runs the bloodwork, monitors anesthesia, counts the respirations, and notices the small thing that turns out to matter. She knows your pet’s name before the doctor ever walks into the room.

We asked our techs: “What do you wish clients knew?” Here’s what they said:
💙 Kamryn: “How much their pets mean to us.”
💙 Maria: “We think about them outside of work.”
💙 Jenna: “How much we truly care about every pet.”
💙 Kelli: “How much I love seeing all the different pets.”
💙 Naomie: “How much of the job we take home each night.”
💙 Sarah: “How often we think about our clients in our off time.”
💙 Nikki: “How much we care about them.”

Different techs, one common thread: your pets are on their minds long after the clinic doors close. 💕

Next time you’re in, please join us in thanking our amazing team! Drop a comment below to show them some love. 👇

🤍 Sophie -Our Gentle Giant with the Biggest Heart 🤍

For three years, we had the privilege of knowing and loving Sophie, and she truly made an impression on everyone she met. From the moment she walked through our doors, she always greeted our staff with the sweetest spirit. Those familiar greetings and her gentle presence were such a special part of our time with her, and she will always hold a special place in our hearts. 🐾

Sophie’s family describes her perfectly as “our gentle giant with the biggest heart.” In her time with them, she made every day brighter, brought laughter with her silly personality, and filled their home with so much love. She loved going on walks, enjoying a little peanut butter, snuggling close to her favorite people, and, of course, a good hotdog! And those hugs? They were the best. ❤️

To her family, Sophie was so much more than a dog. She was a best friend, a source of comfort, and a beloved family member who made life sweeter just by being in it. She had a special way of making everyone feel like a friend, leaving a little piece of her heart with everyone she met.

From our staff who looked forward to her sweet greetings to the family who got to experience her unconditional love every day, Sophie touched so many lives in her own special way.

Sophie, thank you for allowing us to be a small part of your story. You will be deeply missed, but the love you shared and the paw prints you left on our hearts will remain forever.

Rest peacefully, sweet girl. 🌈🐾

Will someone be with him the whole time?” Yes. Here is what that actually means. 🐾

Before anything starts, he gets an exam and bloodwork, and his anesthesia plan is built around what comes back: his age, his weight, and his kidney values. Not a standard dose off a chart.

He gets an IV catheter and fluids. He gets a warming blanket, because anesthesia can lower body temperature, and keeping him warm helps support a smoother recovery.

A technician stays with him from the first medication until he lifts his head, monitoring his heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, temperature, and breathing, and recording everything every five minutes.

Nobody leaves him alone in there. That is the part worth knowing. ❤️🐱

Meet Dr. Laura Arington, our owner and veterinarian.

What she’d want you to know: “I believe the human-pet bond makes life more fulfilling and enjoyable.”

The part of the job most people don’t see: “The hard work the team puts in daily for each pet, inputting notes, studying cases, planning, and administering treatments. And the tears we shed for your pets when we have to say goodbye.”

At home she’s got a Shih Tzu named Widget, a poodle named Gigi, and a fish tank.

Next time you’re in, say hi.

Most of a tooth sits under the gumline. That is the part that hurts.

A tooth can look fine from the outside and be sitting on an abscess. Pets do not stop eating, they do not whine, and they do not tell you. They just live with it, sometimes for years.

This is Pat’s before and after.

Owners tell us the same thing almost every time: he is acting like a puppy again. He was not old. He was in pain.

Ask us to look at your pet’s teeth at the next visit. It takes about thirty seconds.

“He’s just getting old” is the most common thing we hear, and it is the one we most often turn out to be wrong about.

Slowing down on walks. Sleeping more. Drinking more water. Getting picky about food. Hesitating at the stairs. Every one of those gets written off as age, and every one of them is also an early sign of something we can treat: kidney disease, arthritis, thyroid, a painful tooth.

Bloodwork on a senior pet costs less than most people expect and tells us more than an exam alone ever will. It is how we find things while they are still small enough to do something about.

If your dog or cat is over seven, ask us about a senior panel at the next visit. 513-242-2141.

🐾 Pet of the Week: Benjamin! 🐾

Meet Benjamin! 💙

This handsome 11-year-old Terrier came in for an exam and spent his entire visit making sure everything was running smoothly. He took his job as supervisor very seriously!

According to his owner, Isaac, Benjamin has a strong-willed personality and definitely knows what he wants!

We loved having this sweet boy visit us and getting to see his personality shine!

Thanks for being our Pet of the Week, Benjamin!

Fall Pet Safety: A Few Things to Watch For 🍂🐾

Fall brings a few new things into our pets’ yards and garages that are worth keeping an eye on.

🚗 Antifreeze:
That sweet taste can be very tempting to pets, but even a small amount can be extremely dangerous. Keep containers sealed and clean up any spills or leaks right away.

🪲 Cicadas & their shells:
You may start noticing cicadas and their empty shells around the yard and on trees. While cicadas aren’t considered poisonous, eating large numbers of them can cause stomach upset, vomiting, or diarrhea. Keep an eye on curious pets who like to snack on anything they find outside!
A quick walk around the yard and garage can help spot potential hazards before your pet does. 🐶🐱

If you think your pet may have gotten into something they shouldn’t have, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Call your veterinarian right away.
