4th of July ๐บ๐ธ is right around the corner and it is important to make sure you are prepared to keep your pups safe while fireworks go off!
During fireworks, many dog owners deal with fearful and anxious dogs.
Preparing for fireworks ideally starts with puppies, but any dog can be better prepared to prevent firework freakouts.
1. Keep Dogs Away From Fireworks - Keep them inside, donโt fire off personal fireworks or take them to shows.
2. Have Proper ID - Thereโs a better chance theyโll get returned if they run away.
3. Create a Safe Haven - Close windows and curtains to muffle sound. Find a quiet area away from windows - like a basement or a larger closet - so they canโt hear or see fireworks. Associate the area with positive experiences, leave a variety of chew toys and treats; swap them regularly to alleviate boredom.
4. Play White Noise - Leave a fan, TV, or radio on to help mask the sounds.
5. Comfort Or Distract Your Dog - Remain calm, use a soothing, even tone while petting them with long, slow, firm strokes along their body. Distract them with a game or run through physical training exercises.
6. Exercise - Before sunset take a brisk walk and play some high-energy, enrichment activities. A tired, sleepy dog doesnโt have the energy to pace or pant through the house.
7. Desensitize to Firework Sounds - Before the season starts, play the sounds of fireworks. Keep the volume low so itโs noticeable, but your dog shows no signs of stress. Pair the sounds with high value treats.
8. Modeling - Pair your dog with a dog who isnโt afraid. Seeing an older or more dominant dog relaxing and remaining calm can set a precedent.
9. Talk to Your Vet - If anxiety is severe, ask about over-the-counter C*D, dog-calming treats, anxiety vests or medications.
Firework anxiety can take 8-12 hours to dissipate! Avoid going out for the remainder of the night. Let your dog โself-sootheโ focus on licking, chewing, or sniffing activities, offer treat-filled puzzle toys or set up a scavenger hunt; anything that will engage your dog for 15-20 minutes.
Prepare for the next time; continue desensitizing activities and safe haven practices. Advanced preparations can set your dog up for a less stressful firework experience.
We hope these tips keep your pups safe and as calm as possible.
